Police Warn of Visa Scam Targeting Job Seekers for Overseas Work

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has issued a warning about a sophisticated scam network that deceives victims with false promises of overseas employment through fraudulent visa processing. The group is accused of defrauding more than 400 people, causing total losses estimated at over 30 million baht.

According to investigators, the scammers advertise online, often through social media pages such as Ban Fah, offering supposed job opportunities abroad. Once a victim expresses interest, they are taken to sign an agreement with a legitimately registered visa application company, a tactic used to gain credibility.

Victims are then told to apply for a tourist visa first, under the false assurance that it can later be converted into a work visa once they arrive in the destination country. The fraudsters charge inflated “processing” and “document fees,” often demanding tens of thousands of baht in advance.

However, when the agreed travel date arrives, victims discover there is no actual job or work permit awaiting them, and the scammers vanish with the money. Police reports indicate that each victim lost around 80,000 baht, with some paying even more.

The CIB stated that the network’s operations appear well-organised, using official-looking documents and legally registered companies as a front. Authorities are now tracking the main suspects and their accomplices for prosecution under criminal and anti-fraud laws.

Police urged anyone planning to work abroad to verify employment opportunities directly with official agencies, such as the Department of Employment or the Ministry of Labour. They also warned the public not to trust online advertisements or social media posts that offer quick or guaranteed overseas jobs.

Key Takeaways

• Over 400 people were defrauded by a visa scam promising jobs abroad, with total losses exceeding 30 million baht.

• Victims were tricked into applying for tourist visas under the false promise they could be converted to work visas.

• Police advise verifying all overseas job offers with official agencies before paying any fees.

I guess all those scam centers in Myanmar and Cambodia need someone to cheat.
