When i lived in surin years ago the expats i meet had a serious drinking problem.When i visit surin last year 3 expats i used to visit had died.According to the widows they drank themselves to death.

I mix with expats daily and my tourist friends who visit from time to time. Mix is something expats in Nakhon Nowhere can't do it seems, too isolated

To be fair expats drink themselves to death in Pattaya also but at least they have a social life

As I thought, you are lumbered with tourist, 365 days a year, most just go on a holiday to do that then escape back to what they have built to enjoy.

Rigth.The expats in rural Thailand is often lonely and can't speak thai.Make it easy to drink everyday in the garden they migth have.When the expats in surin visit me they arrived drunk even at 10 am.

Every time the wifes complained, and i understand them.Told me they eat a little bit during the day and the breakfast allways started with beers.Never travel anywhere around looking other places.

I have thought about it myself, living away from all the hassle, but I like living by the sea too much, and the proximity of the shops and services.

Best ones are probably in Pattaya

 

Most guys live in these places to get away from the craziness of the beach resorts, plus all the criminals, tourist muppets, and general nobs for a quieter time or more authentic Thai city experience that isn't as expensive... horses for courses on this one, I guess.

Many also go to live closer to where their wife is from, so you often find a smattering of foreigners in these bigger cities... but these cities are fine as most of these cities have everything you need or want other than the neon glitzy girlie bars, and they are more soapy massage style.

 

However, you do come across signs like this one...
