funny that.   they use whitening cream on their skin like it's going out of fashion!   Eric.

  • Interesting subject. Thai people I know like to say how much they paid for something. Where I come from its more like how cheap I bought something, how much I saved. Different culture, different

  • If you are low on cash, it becomes the most important thing in the world, anywhere in the world. If you have money, then you can start considering other things.   I don't know where you come

Again, just my opinion.

However, flaunting it constantly is just masking one's own insecurities imo.

It was 18 degrees celsius in London the other day.

We are in the middle of November.

Do you think that's normal?

Eric.

Yes, it's absolutely normal when, in the last few years, solar activity has been at its peak, with the Northern Lights visible in most countries except Thailand. Therefore, global warming is evident if you have a constantly active furnace like the sun irradiating planet Earth. But strangely, this isn't discussed in the mainstream media.

What's really funny

is that fex a thaigirl get 10,000 baht or 50,000 baht its all gone in a day or two

When asked where the money went they all say the same..I DON'T KNOW!

They spend the money for things the really don't need..its just for show off..

@Stressed Eric mate, I was actually chatting with this bloke Bob the other day. You might have heard of him. He's famous amongst the ladyboys down your way. Lives in a tiny shack with a squeaky fan somewhere down near BuaKhao. Claims to have a safe full of cash with gold bars bitcoin and a few Rolex watches but somehow never has enough money to buy a plate of pad krapao without moaning about the price of a cup of ice. Anyway he gets along just fine in Thailand despite being absolutely skint. Not a single baht to rub together and always whining about the price of baht buses.

Funny that really. You are here suggesting that only people with deep pockets survive in the land of smiles yet Bob has been here for years, has to fart to put a cent in his pants, but seems to get by just fine. Every day he used to be on the forum telling everyone how the locals secretly hate foreigners and how Thailand has lost its magic then the very next day he is splashing in the sea with monkeys or having his toes nibbled by some cock-in-a-frock he met on Soi 6.

So I reckon the theory is off. Money is not the be all and end all in Thailand. If a perpetually miserable git like Bob can survive with nothing but a stack of recycled rants and a fantasy safe full of pretend gold bars then the rest of us are probably going to be alright.

Give that mug my regards by the way if you run into him. Tell him only he can pull off all that whingeing without bursting into flames from his own contradictions.

If you have money here, you live like a king and can literally do anything.

If you are broke, there is no safety net and you have to resort to selling homemade sauces or become a beach vendor in order to stay alive..

I often wonder, are we only tolerated here because of our money, or do the thais genuinely like westerners??

It's a question that rings around my head on a daily basis...

Eric.

mate, money is the be all and end all everywhere, the fact i have money means i have freedom and options, i can live the life i want, if i didn't have money i wouldn't be able to. same for every country.

Always amazed that so many foreigners have not yet understood that Thailand only likes them for their money.

But that fine as it is the same in any country. Except that in Thailand, the immigration hassles and red tape are pushing out the quality foreigners who are usually home owners...but on the other hand likes to get the huge numbers of hordes of tourists who mostly spend very little during their 2 week stay.

Money rules.

Most of the local ladies in Thailand with foreigner men are been paid for their female company very often.

I was in Petchabun a couple of days ago and stopped near a cop so I asked him if he knew where a good coffee shop was. He was only too happy to help.

Many Thai's have helped me out if I have needed it. It reminds me of my country as a lad - a throw back to when people were brought up to be neighborly, not fearful.

There are 76+ million Thais and most don't give a thought to falang as they are just busy getting on with their lives.

Not showing of wealth/gaining face is not a thing here IMO. Why would we think it is? If we enter the orbit of those that are obsessed with money, it's no surprise we may think that ALL they think about is money.

But most people just try to get by and look after their family IMO.

The two week tourist spends far more than your average long stayer.

Thailand would rather have 26 foreigners each staying for 2 weeks than one staying a year imo.

Agree 100%. The long termers overestimate the contribution they make to the economy.

They consider people with less money to be "lower grade" people judging from their posts on social media about cheap farangs, I think that tells you all you need to know about the depth of society here.

So true.

Isn’t true everywhere?

You only feel about it if you do not have enough for a sustainable and healthy life, at once you can not invest in your health, you start to acknowledge the importance of having some kind of solids for security.

Stupid.  Just about every country and  every person is about money.  People will lie and say they don't care as they complain about being poor.

In more advanced societies they have something called universal healthcare.

Whatever you think, we have no rights here as temporary guests, and it is your duty to have what you need for a sustainable life here. Simple as that.

And most of the foreigners, with a local lady, wants her to stop work and spend time with him. How do you calculate that equation?

Eric.

Really, what's an advanced society ? G 7 ... G 20

Is USA advanced, as they lack universal healthcare.  AI states about 70 of 200 countries have some kind of universal / lower cost healthcare, for their 'citizens'.

Your universal healthcare isn't free, as you are taxed, some countries quite heavily, for healthcare, that you many never use.   I prefer the pay as you need plan, as I try to stay healthy, and prefer not to pay for other peoples poor health habits, obesity, vice related health issues, with my earned money.

You abuse & ruin your body, then you pay for it, not me.

Maybe if you volunteer to live outside the country you paid taxes for healthcare, your whole working life, you should hve enough money to support yourself, and not depend on other people's money.

You can't blame them - just go up this thread and have a good look at that bare bodied foreigner in red shorts, sniffing around the girls! Over estimating oneself as of a higher grade by downgrading a bunch of other's... speaks volumes... IMHO

In indsight, it's ridiculous, it screams 'I want to be accepted socially by displaying my apparent wealth to everybody'. It's just showing off, but no substance.

Not to mention burgled or kidnapped.
