We finally agree about something - 5 zip - unless rain stops play and/or Joe Root and Ben Stokes have a great match or two.  Likewise, unless Woods and Archer can break through the Aussie top 5/6 they are going to get smashed. Great to see Nathan Lyon in the squad - probably his last series at 38. Only a few more wickets to become the 2nd most ever for Australia. But no Test player from any country will get past the GOAT (Shane Warne) - I am excluding that chucker from Sri Lanka.

If England can't win the first test with Cummins and Hazelwood being out for the Aussies then they will get battered in the series.

Probably weakest Aussie team for 15 years or so but might still be good enough to win on home turf.

Hoping Root breaks his hoodoo and finally gets a ton in Australia. He needs to continue his good form if England are going to stand a chance.

I'm hoping it won't be a one-sided affair. Unless it's England doing the winning....555

Reckon it's going to be a real close one.

Expect the Poms to win the first test with Cummins and Hazlewood not playing.

Should be a great series.

Looking forward to the first session on Friday.

I thought England had already lost the first test after being skittled for 172. Phenomenal bowling by Starc.

England are making a game of it though with the Aussies at 30-3. Game on! If Archer stays fit he will have a big say in this series.

The test won't last more than three days though....

Wow! Wow! England might be batting again soon and it's still the first day...

Almost 2 innings in a day an entertaining day of cricket with a good display of fast bowling on a fast and bouncy pitch, Starc's best 7-58, impressive, anything to do with the fact it is a drop-in- pitch?

The BBC;s tex commentary said, and some of the pundits, England's batting was" reckless "all bazball, about right for England, but their bowling made up for it,who would have thought Stokes would get 5 wickets, abet the long tail.

Should be an interesting day 2.

A guy writing on Tex commentary,"Flying 4000km from Hong Kong, for the 3ed day ,will they be a third day/full third day, "anyone with day five tickets will be out of luck.

I hope I don't regret saying this but.......not a bad start by England in their second innings. Equivalent of 90-1 at the moment. A pair from Crawley. IF, and it's a big IF England could set a target of +275 for Aussies to chase then they would have an outstanding chance of winning the first test.

Interesting stat from the BBC website:-

Openers dismissed for a duck in both innings of an Ashes Test by the same bowler...

  • Batter: Vic Richardson Bowler: Harold Larwood Test: 1933, Sydney
  • Batter: Jack Moroney Bowler: Trevor Bailey Test: 1950, Brisbane
  • Batter: Trevor Bailey Bowler: Ray Lindwall Test: 1959, Melbourne
  • Batter: Dennis Amiss Bowler: Dennis Lillee Test: 1975, Adelaide
  • Batter: David Warner Bowler: Stuart Broad Test: 2019, Manchester
  • Batter: Zak Crawley Bowler: Mitchell Starc Test: 2025, Perth

Won't be 5 - 0.

Could be a draw or two. 🏏

Only if the weather plays a part most likely. I think both bowling lines up are strong and the batting at times inept, to play out a 5 day draw.

One day batting, test match bowling. This will be done before lunch on day 3. An awful lot of earning potential down the drain. Broadcasters, fans, sponsors and advertisers all sold short. How can it be fixed?

Totally agree. I think Aussies will do it comfortably as well. Don't think they will lose more than 4 wickets.

Great opportunity thrown away by England, another batting capitulation. Little point in the bowlers doing such a great job if the batters can't back them up.

As I posted earlier, I can't see a single test going the full distance unless the weather plays a part.

Looks if he will be spending a day on the beach, or whatever, England batting yet again, dismal to put it mildly, proves it can be batted on an almost record- breaking innings from Head.

Much talk will center on the pitch and the clatter of wickets. At 847 balls bowled, this was the shortest completed Ashes Test since 1888.

That was a BBC guy writing, the drop in pitch, jury out on that, England bowling as bad as it was good in the first innings.

Next test a day-night one at Brisbane, anyone for 2-0.

What a demolition by Head!   The Poms will need to do a bit of soul-searching after this loss.

Effectively 100 in the lead with 9 wickets in hand - then 5 hours later - all over roverl

Head to remain opener.

The day -night game starts tomorrow, England are underdogs, are they going to play cricket or bazball , answers on a postcard.......

First off , congratulations to Joe Root ,his first Australian 100, and still going strong.

That man Starc again, another 6 wicket haul, got Brook soon as he comes on, but yet again Brook got himself out.

Maybe those who brought tickets for day  4 and 5 might see some cricket this time.

I thought on day one they might be a game this time, well wrong.

The Gab-attoir is living up to its name, more to do with England cutting their own throat's, by throwing away their wickets, yet again.

Interesting fact only third test when all the players got in to double figures, I would like to know last time a team got 500 plus runs and no one scored a century.

Roll on Adelaide.

Whoops, the Poms have something to whinge about, and to blame the 5-0 whacking on...  Today, Alex Carey feathered a ball, given not out, he didn't walk, England referred and Snicko confirmed not out.  Later, he said he did hit the ball and should've been out, and Snicko was working properly (or operator error).  The system is provided by the local TV company.

My tuppence worth?  Tough!  Get on with it!  Alex did nothing wrong!  Yeah, bitch about the system, bitch about the operator, they'll all be embarssased enough to get better next time, but there's no chance this was deliberate!  Play better and you might win!  Usman Khawaja was dropped on 5 runs and went on to make 82 for goodness sake!  I've no need to mention the performances at Perth and Brissy of course!
