Police in Phuket have dismantled a large-scale fraudulent parcel operation, seizing over 20,000 items linked to a cash-on-delivery (COD) scam. The raid, conducted yesterday by Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum and his team, targeted a commercial unit in Boat Plaza, Rassada, revealing a scheme where packages were sent to unsuspecting recipients.

The operation came to light following investigations into fraudulent activities linked to the premises. Police discovered a single-unit commercial property filled with cardboard boxes and sacks. A 31-year-old woman from Trang province, identified as the main suspect, was arrested on-site. She allegedly shifted from selling goods online to executing this deceptive scheme by purchasing recipient names from a logistics company for one baht each.

Packages contained low-cost cosmetics and personal care products and were shipped under COD terms, often resulting in unexpected charges for the recipients. Some recipients unwittingly paid for these goods, while rejected parcels were returned and reused in the scam. The business had reportedly been active since August 2024 and was estimated to earn around 100,000 baht daily. On the day of the police raid, over 2,000 parcels had already been dispatched.

Experts believe the operation raked in over 3.1 million baht based on an average transaction of 150 baht per parcel. Authorities confiscated 7,492 illegal products, 5,223 packaging materials, 3,890 packed parcels, 1,099 parcels ready for dispatch, and 3,125 returned parcels, totaling 20,829 items. The suspect is currently held by Mueang Phuket Police for further proceedings.

Looking ahead, continued investigations seek to unravel connections to other potential suspects and similar scams in the country. Authorities are urging the public to report unsolicited COD deliveries to prevent being victimized by similar fraudulent schemes, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Phuket police dismantled a massive parcel scam operation.

Yikes...

Before paying for Cash On Delivery parcel, you should ask the box to be opened if in doubt. Don't pay immediately.

Impossible, and will not be accepted by the delivery person.

It came in that you can ask for it to be opened and they have to. I often ask the parcels to be opened. It only changed in the last year I think.

No problem: Then the package will not be accepted.:coffee1:

If you have ordered something under the COD condition, you know how much you have to pay. It is also important to know in advance whether it is a reliable supplier, so you would think that nothing can go wrong.

People have trouble remembering what they purchased COD?

Generally, it isn't illegal to sell customer lists, unless an employee stole it without permission.

This is what internet carriers and sites do with your digital address and surfing history.

Is it any different than the companies who sell their mailing lists?

When you sign up for services, you typically give permission for the sale of the data.

Yes, of course, I do that too, but not in front of the delivery person, that's a different story.

pro tip.... Open the box up from the bottom leaving everything on the top intact.

It still leaves me with my original question.... People can't remember what they've ordered COD?
