Expecting perfection abroad

Featured Replies

Many Western tourists and expats in Thailand act as if they are superior to the very country they chose to live in.

They demand perfection in everything — bureaucracy, traffic, daily life — yet back home, often facing real problems, they quietly accept their governments’ decisions.

In Thailand, however, they suddenly act entitled, talk big, and expect flawless service they would never demand at home.

This behavior is completely unacceptable and deeply irritating to me, and it's more common among western female expats.

They never do that in a country that's equal or above their home country status.

Just another built-in cheap human trait.

One of the best thing about being from the USA is that you know that there isnt going to be better living overall anywhere else, so you just view a trip outside the USA as a camping trip.

And then they look in the mirror.

Asian women usually trigger western females especially when they are with western men who prefer the subservient feminine orientals over the beefy, opinionated, loud western females.

Women are bitchy by nature, it kicks in when they start menstruating.

Camping is very popular in the USA these days I see.

I thought we all moved here because we didn't like our home countries governments?

I prefer to use the words 'more cooperative' than subservient.

My Thai misses is in no way subservient, say the wrong thing and she'll fly into a rage, keep going and a kitchen knife will be waved. But she's very cooperative in the bedroom, none of this "I'm too tired after a day doing housework and looking after the kids" nonsense.

Same with my 2x previous Thai LTRs, cooperative, not subservient ........ also a tad too prone to violence.

If you've seen one, you've seen them all.

I came here to avoid the Brit police and women in general.

I guess 1 out of 2 ain't bad.

And I did manage to avoid women for the first 4 nights here, before a series of epic fails.

How come I vere seldom see foreigners with true feminine beautiful girls here in Thailand. Not many back home either who came with their often elderly spouse

You had a tarp roofed hovel in Ubon, wow, then I suppose moving to Cambodia was an upgrade for you, well done.............:clap2:

I don't know why you keep saying I can't get into Cambodia, very strange, you don't have to be a commie to get in, you know, though I have no intensions of ever going there, comrade....:offtopic2:

There’s a reason people instinctively grumble about their lot in life. On the surface, it looks like negativity, but in practice it can be surprisingly therapeutic.

Pressure release: Complaining acts like a valve. Bottled‑up frustrations—whether about work, bureaucracy, or daily irritations—find a safe outlet. Saying them aloud reduces the mental load.

Validation: When someone listens, even briefly, it confirms that your struggles are real. That recognition can be more soothing than immediate solutions.

Perspective shift: By articulating grievances, you often hear yourself more clearly. What felt overwhelming in silence can shrink once spoken, or even sound absurd enough to laugh at.

Connection: Shared complaints build solidarity. “Your lot” becomes “our lot,” and suddenly the burden feels lighter because it’s carried together.

In short, complaining isn’t just venting—it’s a form of self‑therapy. It helps people process stress, reclaim perspective, and sometimes even find humor in the absurdity of life’s challenges.

Maybe that is what the OP is actually doing without realising?

I'm not into perfection.   I would like to see better pedestrian safety.

A gentle reminder of the title of the thread and the OP below. I realize that many posters on AN are of an advanced age and have cognitive issues (like Trump), so I'm happy to help out.

Title of the thread:

"Expecting perfection abroad"

The OP:

"Many Western tourists and expats in Thailand act as if they are superior to the very country they chose to live in.

They demand perfection in everything — bureaucracy, traffic, daily life — yet back home, often facing real problems, they quietly accept their governments’ decisions.
