When I was in NATO, I met one of the first RAF SAS Graduates, only a few a year were nominated from the Royal Air Force and less than that actually finished.   And, like your friend, never talked about it, I found out when I visited him and his wife in Madeira, Portugal and saw his Diploma - then we talked all night over some of the best Port Wine I ever had.  No Tattoos, no Bragging, just plain confidence.
