Why don't they soundproof buildings in Thailand?

Featured Replies

It seems like no matter where I go/stay, the buildings are never soundproofed.

Even 5 star hotel rooms aren't soundproofed.

Sometimes you can hear the couple next door arguing / bonking in the middle of the night..

Does anyone know why this is? its very annoying, especially when you are paying top dollar!

Eric.

These buildings are built super cheap.

Between the walls are very small bricks with cement render.

Just for you to have something to open up yet another idiotic topic about.

Thais like noise  it helps them sleep 😋

for example the trucks and motorbikes have modified exhausts for loudness and they often doze off at the wheel !!

While we're at it. Why don't Thais put damp proof membranes into their house builds?

I would imagine the reason for the arguing/bonking you can hear is possibly the wife having a go at her husband along the lines of:

" you take me to a nice hotel or so you say, for a night of passion and we end up in the room next door to that knob Stressed Eric. All the hotels you could have booked and all the rooms we could have been in and we end up next door to him! You are useless, utterly useless! I suppose we might as well have a shag to take my mind off of the knob jockey next door but I'm not happy. First thing in the morning you get your ar$e down to reception and demand they move us to another room."

Something along those lines.

It is a question of evolution.

I had a house in the UK that didn't have footings far less any "damp proof membranes". The timber frame sat on a bed of shale.

With a solid concrete base and pillar construction it is a bit difficult to look at damp  proofing. The floor should be above ground level to mitigate the risk  of damp.

In 17 years I haven't seen any sign of damp on internal wall and  only some slight peeling of the paint at ground level on the external walls.

If you mean the small red fire bricks, hotels certainly will not be built with them.

Thais appear to love noise. They can't sleep if its quiet. Like most things here, it makes no sense.

As for buildings, in Asia they are only one brick thick, no double walls like in the West. Yet they want ever increasing amounts of money for poorly constructed properties.

Probably already said, but cost, time and most Thais don’t mind noise.
Was recently pleasantly surprised at a hotel stay near the airport. Slight noise from arrivals next door but pretty quiet room complete with dampeners on the doors and great blackout curtains. Nothing worse than numpty guests slamming hotel doors.

Eric.

Are you worried that the neighbors will hear the screaming and moaning when your Ladyboy lover is shagging you?  💋

Cavity wall construction is not very common, but you shouldn't try and make out it is unheard of. Mine was done that way in 2009

You need  to get out a bit more.  I built mine in 2009 and builder did an excellent job. Even a thread on here a while back,

AI Overview

Yes, cavity wall construction is used in Thailand, particularly for modern buildings and villas, to improve insulation and keep homes cooler. While it is not the most common method compared to single-layer walls, builders are increasingly using it to mitigate the heat from the tropical climate, especially when combined with lightweight insulated blocks like AAC or Q-con blocks. This construction method is a way to adapt traditional tropical design with modern insulation techniques.

But doubles the price of your build.

You should just get yourself some portable soundproofing for your ears, take them anywhere and plug e’m in when needed.

Indeed,  because I wanted the cavity wall I started off with builders that had western management and they were at least double, and more, in their quotes.

I ended up with a Thai builder who was probably about a third more than it would have been for single wall and 16 years later have no  complaints about the work done, in particular the brickwork and the electrics.

As a percentage, how much more did it cost than single wall?

Soundproofing.....unless very extensive and expensive............ does little to prevent heavy bass notes.

The lower frequencies lose little energy during transmission so they can be heard for miles.

The solution (I laugh) is noise abatement.
