An elderly woman was discovered alive just before her cremation at Wat Rat Prakong Tham in Nonthaburi on 23 November 2025. Relatives had brought her from Phitsanulok, believing she had died the previous night. Staff at the temple were shocked to find her moving and breathing normally when the coffin was opened.

The woman had been pronounced dead in Phitsanulok and her body was transported by her family in a coffin on a vehicle for cremation. She had previously pledged to donate her body, but the receiving hospital had not collected it. Upon arrival at Wat Rat Prakong Tham, temple staff checked the coffin and confirmed that she was still alive, able to move her arms and legs.

Temple officials immediately arranged for her to be taken to a hospital for medical examination and care. The woman is now under medical supervision to ensure her health is stable. The incident has drawn attention to the procedures for confirming death before transport and cremation.

Authorities have not issued a formal statement, but the temple’s prompt action prevented a potential tragedy. Experts emphasise the importance of rigorous medical confirmation before declaring death, particularly in cases involving elderly or ailing individuals. Families are advised to verify documentation and hospital verification when handling post-mortem procedures.

Amarin reported that the woman’s recovery and ongoing monitoring remain the priority, and the temple has confirmed that she is receiving full medical support. Authorities may review procedural safeguards to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Key Takeaways

• An elderly woman from Phitsanulok was mistakenly declared dead and transported for cremation.

• Temple staff discovered she was alive, preventing a potential tragedy.

• She is now receiving medical care and under close supervision.

  • The people who declared her death should be prosecuted.... the doctors and nurses are educated to find out if somebody died, but this is terrible.. not only for the poor woman but also for the family.

I think you will find that no doctor or nurse said she was dead or issued a death certificate.

Every year or so a similar story is published in the Thai media - I wonder how many other cases there are which go unreported by the media.

My absolute worst horror nightmare, along with being buried whilst still living.

"The woman had been pronounced dead in Phitsanulok and her body was transported by her family in a coffin on a vehicle for cremation. She had previously pledged to donate her body, but the receiving hospital had not collected it".

Seems a bit weird... did the family skip the hospital visit/ doctor verification of death and sent her straight to the temple?

Sounds like attempted murder.  Wonder if the police'll look into who stood to gain from her death...

Maybe you should have read the update above, as nothing new in the ABC story, which has just been copied from the Thai media sources.

It's a modern day version of Poe's The Cask of Amontillado from the victim's view. Thank God that last thing they do before cremations is to open the coffin.  How the hell can the village head - and not a doctor - sign the papers stating she is dead.  No death certificate?  Gawd!

Or, much worse, being burned, which cannot be ruled out either.

It is a long drive from Phitsanulok to Nonthaburi in a coffin -  365Kms taking around 5 hours!

Perhaps they should have stopped enroute at a pharmacy and asked for something to stop the coughing!

sounds like her family wanted to get rid off her very fast.. village insurance to claim ..

One nights deep sleep can get you in a lot of trouble in thailand I wonder did her family have the will ready lol.

Back in the day, before burial at sea they would sow the sailors body into a sail cloth sack.

But always the last stitch went through the dead man’s nose to make sure he was dead.

That might have been useful this time.  At least they did check her before cremation….

I read about it yesterday in another article.

Apparently a young relative contacted the headman of the village and said she was dead, the head man somehow arranged a death certificate.

As she was being taken to be cremated she woke up and banged on the wall or the lid of the coffin, the workers opened it up and found her, apparently she had been in a coma like state due to low blood sugar levels.

I read a while a ago when people were 'buried at sea' in the merchant navy, the cloth used to encase the dead person was stitched together around the body, the last stitch went through the cloth and through the nose of the body just to make sure they were dead, maybe such a thing can be introduced in Thailand.

The dangers of living in small backward villages eh?

There seems to be a few versions of the story with different facts, the source of the information is based on a guy from a village so who knows what the real facts are as what I read is different to this, I am not arguing, just making a statement. 👍
