A 68-year-old Thai woman was injured by a stray bullet to her left thigh during cross-border fighting between Myanmar military forces and the Karen National Union (KNU) on 2 December 2025. The incident occurred in Ban Mae Ku, Mae Sot district, Tak province, while the woman, Mrs. Lha Pin, was at home. Four nearby Thai houses also suffered minor damage from gunfire.

The clashes took place near the Myanmar border at several locations, including Ban Min La Pan, Ban Mae Gon Gen and Ban Eung Ji Miang in Myawaddy township, Kayin State, directly opposite Thai villages in Mae Sot district. Both sides used heavy weapons and small arms, with the Myanmar military reportedly attempting to reclaim key KNU positions. At 10:00, Myanmar forces also conducted multiple bombing runs using YAK-130 aircraft, with explosions heard across Thai border subdistricts including Mae Ku, Maha Wan, Mae Tao and Mae Sot.

Local authorities, including village headman Mr. Kasem, Thai border patrol police (RTP Border Patrol Unit 346) and the Royal Thai Special Task Force Ratchamanu, inspected the damage and ensured residents’ safety. The stray bullet that hit Mrs. Lha Pin occurred while she was watching television in her bedroom; she moved within the room after hearing gunfire but was struck before she could fully seek cover. She reported severe pain and required hospital treatment.

Matichon reported that officials have warned local residents to remain vigilant, especially those living close to the border. Thai forces continue to monitor the area closely, maintaining border security and preventing violations of Thai sovereignty. This marks an unprecedented incident for the local community, which has not previously experienced cross-border spillover at this scale.

i am curious just how they can assure safety when dealing with another countries army attacking and firing weapons in their direction? Are these people going to stand in front of the civilians to accept the bullets flying at them?

Time to send a message to that country.
