Better Than Beans on Toast ...

Just discovered it: Canned Mackerel in Tomato Sauce on Toast.

Lots of protein, omega-3, and, maybe, calcium.  Not the sugar of canned beans.  Cheaper, not the rip-off that are imported foods, and tastes better.

All-in-all, a fast, cheap, tasty, nutritious snack.

I have been eating that, normally once per week with some sliced cucumber and a splash of Sarson's, for over 35 years. Because I like it and because of the health benefits of the Mackerel.

Alternatively, I will mash the Mackerel and mix it with some finely diced raw onion, chopped cornichon/gherkin, splash of Sarson's, black pepper and have it with salad in a sandwich.

sounds ok   have you tried using fresh mackerel  and omitting the tomato sauce?

I switched from the bog standard 17 baht tins to the 35 baht tin, bones and skin removed, just better quality

Similar to a Ukrainian/Russian/Eastern Ashkenazi dish known as Forshmach. You would need to soak out the tomato, vinegar or soy from the canned/jarred fish if you use apple.  I like it with pickled herring, onion, apple on black bread

From AI:

Vorschmack (or Forshmak) is a traditional Eastern European dish, often Ashkenazi Jewish, meaning "foretaste," made from minced salted fish (usually herring) or meat, blended with onions, sometimes apple, and served as a spread or pâté on bread, with variations in Jewish, Finnish, Russian, and Polish cuisines. It's known for its salty, savory flavor and can be served hot (Finnish style with lamb/beef) or cold (Jewish style as chopped herring) with sides like potatoes, pickles, and sour cream, evolving from German Vorgeschmack.

Rather a misleading headline. Yes, mackerel would be better than beans IF you like that sort of thing.

Melted cheese on top of beanz is heavenly.

Holy Mackerel....now elevated to an elite food by the AN purists....what about the lowly sardine?

Tinned pilchards give me a gagging reflex - money was rather scarce when I was a kid, and tinned pilchards was about all we could afford. Better than saveloy soup (sans the saveloys), but not by much.  And now tinned fish has become a delicacy - difficult to believe.

Mind you, I believe they used to feed prison inmates in colonial America the cheap and lowly lobster, and look what happened to that. :coffee1:

Mackerel, sardines, pilchards - pick your flavour.

What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet. :coffee1:

for those concerned about mercury content ...

(arsenic not really an issue with mackerel)

Pilchards are adult sardines of the herring family. Mackerel is another of the tuna family

You have to be careful of where the Mackerel came from , if China sea area,

could be infected with fall out from that Japanese nuclear disaster, and a lot

of the tinned fish from china ,S.E, Asia are also infected with worms, you don't

want to end up like kennedy jnr.

I only eat king Oscar sardines , caught in Norwegian waters and processed

in Poland , and John West Kippers ...

'Pretty much anything' would include all other foods, so you shouldn't really need suggestions, but here goes:  I'll admit beans and toast is pretty good with a few alterations. Substitute the bread with warm, hand-made tortillas, either corn or flour. Then change from your bland baked beans to refried pinto beans made Mexican style. Instead of stinky sardines on top, throw on some roasted green chilis, chopped onions, cilantro, fresh pico de gallo salsa, shredded cabbage, and a squirt of lime juice. There now, I have turned your beans and toast into something edible. You are welcome.

Prefer sardines,  Mash then up in pan with a sliced tomato. Lay the tomato on my home made  grain bread , spread sardine mash on top then add a poached egg on top with a light sprinkling of black pepper and grated cheddar cheese.
