Former Beatle Paul McCartney has publicly denounced the European Parliament’s recent approval of a ban on using meat-associated terms like “burger”, “sausage” and “steak” for plant-based foods. Joined by eight UK MPs, he argues that the restriction undermines both consumer clarity and the momentum behind environmental and health-focused food trends.

The EU vote — 355 in favour, 247 opposed — would prohibit labels such as “veggie burger” or “tofu sausage,” forcing producers to resort to less appetizing alternatives like “discs” or “tubes.” McCartney and his allies maintain that plainly marking products as “plant-based,” “vegan,” or “vegetarian” offers enough transparency for consumers.

As one of the most visible supporters of vegetarianism — co-founder of the Linda McCartney Foods line in 1991 and co-creator of the global Meat Free Monday movement — McCartney warns the ban could stifle innovation in the expanding plant-based sector.

Critics of the law point out that standard definitions already recognise “burger” as a “flat round mass of minced meat or vegetables,” meaning plant-based alternatives should retain the familiar names. They argue that the ban appears driven by meat-industry lobbying rather than actual consumer confusion.

Key Takeaways

The European Parliament’s ban on using traditional meat-linked labels for plant-based foods has triggered sharp backlash — including public criticism from Paul McCartney.

Opponents argue that clear “vegan,” “vegetarian,” or “plant-based” labeling already provides sufficient clarity for consumers.

Critics warn the move could hamper the growth of the plant-based food industry and reflects pressure from meat and farming interests, not actual demand from shoppers.

Some high estrogen twit added the "or vegetables"  to the definition of what a burger is.  The world has had enough of celebrities and their activism.  McCartney looks like he's lactating.

Burger, sausages, mince and nuggets are processed food products, which are widely understood can contain meat and/or vegetarian ingredients. The clue is in the product description and labelling.

Now if trying to pass a product off as "vegetarian steak", "vegetarian beef topside" or "vegetarian chicken breasts" the meat industry would have a point, but not with regard to processed products.

There are a number of other matters confronting the continent which need to be addressed perhaps more urgently if the EU really wishes to be regarded as a putative governmental authority - it does so wish, but is unlikely to be,  particularly and because whilst it meddles in  and wastes time energy and taxpayers' money on, this sort of inconsequential nonsense!

By the way, does anyone remember those gruesome "turkey twizzlers"?

You trying to revive the rumours after how many years?  lol

It's a step in the right direction.

And let's ban that crap outright. It's poison.

And Paul McCartney should shut up and stick to music.

Paul must understand that the EU exists to ban things.

That is its raison d'etre.

If he isn't careful, the Beatles back catalogue will be next with all those nasty drug references. All for "children's safety" of course.

Why would McCartney be in the least bit concerned about the future of the Beatles’ back catalogue.

He’s already cashed in, Sony own the rights.

EU law protected his intellectual property rights until he did so.

I'm a lifelong vegetarian. These products are for fun, or treats, or snacks. They're too heavily processed to be real food. Nevertheless, I think the EU is overreach.

As a meat-eater / omnivore I agree.

Do the EU really think that their citizens are too dumb to tell that a "veggie-burger" is going to be plant based as opposed to a "chicken-burger" which may contain chicken.

They will be legislating that cucumbers have to be straight soon!

Hmm. My cucumber is not straight! And what about that lady with one up her butt...with a bite taken out of it? Now that's a real vegetarian, eh!

Ah, things are now crystal clear.

The reason why you are so staunchly anti-EU is that you have a completely mistaken understanding of its' purpose.
