Tourist Faces Entry Denial at Don Mueang Over Funds Requirement

Some details are being left out of the story I would bet.  Maybe she wanted to make a big deal to get more clicks on her you tube or whatever....if true it seems to have worked.

This requirement complements other necessary documents such as a valid passport, visa application form, recent photo, proof of onward travel, and accommodation details.

Since when does one need to bring a visa application form and a photo when arriving in Thailand? 🤔

She's doing multiple entries into Thailand in one year so yes they want to check her funds to see if she's a real genuine tourist. Obviously if you're going multiple times into a country within one year you have to show funds that you're rich and that you can afford it.

I've almost been denied entry three times a few years ago, but was neither asked to show 20,000 baht, nor how I finance my stay. The only robotic phrase repeated over and over was 'you come too many times'...

This woman doesnt have a Thai Bank account (bank book) with at least 20k in it? 🙄

I have never been asked in 40 years, ever and I had almost 7 entries this year.

My kid was asked once about 8 years ago.

That's a pretty dimwitted comment. No normal person goes around with 20k Baht in their pocket.

Seriously? How many tourists do you suppose have Thai bank accounts??? That's a pretty low IQ comment....

I know every time u reach the thai border it can happen to anyone.Be humble answer questions if needed and most times he or she will let u in

As has been explained in this thread, it's only a minority of people who are asked, when there are other reasons to deny the person entry. The cash issue is just the official reason.

We've been spared one less mind numbing vlog about a place everyone has seen a million times before or god forbid a cost of living video. It's a shame too because maybe she was finally going to be the one to answer if you can really live in Thailand on $1000/month.

Average income in Thailand ex Bangkok is thb 16.000. Why shouldn't she be able to get by on more than the double?

She's a tourist not a Thai citizen.

what has that got to do with anything , the requirement is 20,000bt in cash  what part of that has confused you?

Folks that go to Nana arent normal?

So what is proof of funds? 1) Cash like Baht or Dollars 2) Showing one has this much money in a bank account? I do not normally carry 20,000 Baht in my wallet. Also, isn't Thailand pushing cashless payments?

You figure a tourist can even open a Thai account any more?

If you cannot prove you have 20K THB, which is less than $500, you should not come to Thailand.

Read the thread!  It means cash, only cash, in any currency to the value of 20,000 baht.

Did you crunch the numbers? Based on her own video she's been to Thailand multible times and with some knowledge and moderst living its fully possible to live on 32.000 thb. A fan room for a month outside the tourist trap places is a few 1000 a month, public transportation and local food is cheap. Understand 2 week millionaires find it impossible but living here full time and frequently talking to retirees  who's only income is state pension slightly large its fully possible if one is determined.

I have never needed to use Grab or Bolt  don't even know if its available out here in the sticks,  I have not felt the urge to visit a cinema for over 50 years ,  I have also never (yet) faced a no cash situation were the use of a debit/ credit card was not an option.

I know I know  the hassle of carrying a card with me must be terrible but my cards fit in my wallet and pocket a lot easier than my smartphone

Each to their own is my philosophy and as long as my choices don't negatively effect others they can keep their nose out of my business

You may indeed be able to live without  smart phone living a primitive life .

But for others its becoming increasingly difficult to live without one

Really? Honestly?  You feel immigration did something wrong?

Which country would want a tourist without THB 20k or equivalent?

(Maybe she had plans of earning her stay in Thailand?)

That's approximately USD 627.70. You arrive in a country with less than that amount of money with you?

Dimwitted ? Yes, it is to travel without money.

not ordering taxis or take away food is now considered primitive life    what happened to home cooking ? is that a thing of the past ?  I have my own car and motorcycle, and never use taxis, Why would i?    am i living in the stone age ?

Well - yeahhhhhh.  If you don't have any money honey, it's difficult to believe ya'll are here on vacation.

I don't think the 'monetary amount' or access to funds is an issue - its just that she wasn't carrying it.

Its an archaic rule - if someone can show 'access to cash' (i.e. via a Banking App / Credit card etc) then to have funds in cash is completely superfluous....   (I have not once used cash for over 2 months now & that includes international travel too).

As the lady pointed out - she could have fixed the issue in minutes by going to an ATM - except there is no ATM air-side of Immigration (which is another issue).

Immigration clearly have 'other reasons' as the cash-excuse is so rarely used & has only been used in the past as a technical reason to refuse entry when they suspect something else (i.e the person is here working etc but they can't prove it).

So.... the question begs - Did immigration suspect something else ? or was this just an Immigration officer being very difficult ???

Expand

Good post but I do wish other people would watch the video before commenting. She clearly said she filled the form out wrong and that she could easily have got 20k if allowed to use an ATM. Why she couldn't show a statement on her iPhone though is also a bit strange - who doesn't have online banking these days.

I agree there must be 'other reasons' involved here - perhaps they suspected her working here or the likes.

I watch the vid and ignored that part - as there is no form where you state how much money you are carrying...

There isn't anything to fill out at all at the airport - only the TDAC which is filled out online (within 3 days of arrival) - So maybe there was a mistake on the TDAC - but why would that lead to a check for funds ?

As far as people suggesting know the requirements - Did they know this 'cash' rule when they first came ?

The only reason I know about it is because of this forum - so I was probably coming here for well over 15 years completely unaware about this rule.

The critical part that seems to be overlooked in the video is she admits she filled the form incorrectly. Immigration did what they supposed to do. It’s her own fault.
