In a striking turn of events, Thailand's Defence Ministry has accused Cambodia of violating the Ottawa Convention by planting landmines across the Thai border. The ministry stated on Facebook that evidence collected by the Asean Observer Team clearly implicates Cambodia in these actions. These claims were brought to light at the 22nd Meeting of States Parties to the Ottawa Convention in Geneva, where Cambodia, a signatory to the treaty banning anti-personnel mines, faced scrutiny.

The evidence reportedly includes mapped locations of newly laid mines on Thai soil, traces of mine installations, the presence of PMN-2 anti-personnel mines, and patterns said to be consistent with Cambodian military tactics. Despite these allegations, Cambodia has allegedly failed to provide evidence to refute the claims. The Thai Defence Ministry has accused Cambodia of deflecting the issue, suggesting the renewed attacks are emotional tactics used to dodge international scrutiny.

Reacting to the accusations, Cambodia has countered by accusing Thailand of aggression, attempting to portray itself as a smaller, vulnerable nation up against a more powerful neighbour. This narrative, according to Thailand, is an effort to win international sympathy and divert attention from the core issue, reported the Bangkok Post.

Looking ahead, the spotlight remains on Cambodia to address these serious accusations in accordance with international standards. How Cambodia responds could influence its international standing, especially among treaty signatories. Meanwhile, this situation could fuel further tensions in the region, as both nations continue to engage in a war of words on the global stage.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand accuses Cambodia of landmine violations at the Ottawa Convention meeting.
  • Evidence includes mapped locations and physical mine traces consistent with Cambodian military practice.
  • Cambodia counters with claims of Thai aggression, seeking international sympathy.

THailand waives with the treaty of Ottawa and all other kind of treaties, But do they know what the real border is or what the border is in the idea of  Thailand? The dispute about about a border can not be solved as Thailand doesn't accept any ruling in their disadvantage. So how can you fall back on an international treaty, if the country doesn't accept rulings that are not in their advantage. Respect the borders as they were in 1907 and than there could be solutions maybe. Why not 180 days Thais territory and 180 days Cambodia territory.. All problems solved

Cambodia only copying Russia

Canada is the root of all evil. No treaties should bear a Canadian name. First they started a trade war with the US and now this? God only knows what those animals are capable of.
