Why you blame the staff?

They are just executing orders from above.

Would be better to target your anger at the management or customer service

I am blaming the management.  It's just that is was their poorly trained staff that I had to deal with.

I am going to escalate this to management because it's utterly ridiculous that people's cards just stop working and they won't reactivate without seeing your passport.  What info does my passport have that my ID Card doesn't?

Anyone else that wants to complain to the BTS this is the link

  • Registered my card a long time ago, I'm actually on my 3rd card.     Went to use it last night on the way to a dinner and it wouldn't work.    Oh well I thought, must need topping

  • Just plain dumb   😡

I'd be interested in knowing what their criteria are. My Rabbit card (that I registered ONCE with my passport, whenever that originally became a requirement) still works without disruption, as of today. So it can't be a case of them "blocking" all foreigner-owned cards at once, as some would have you believe. Maybe it's linked to the expiration date of the passport that was used to register?

Your passport is a universally recognised document and the only document which is considered proof of identity for foreigners living or visiting Thailand. It also shows your legal residential status. Did you not have a plasticised copy of your passport? I find this works in most situations except in banks, where they need to see the original. It might have been sufficient.

It seems quite obvious why an ID card from other countries is not considered proof of ID in Thailand. There would be thousands of different ID cards from around the world. Your passport was recorded when you entered Thailand, and can be checked for authenticity. Apart from that, it's a requirement to carry it with you, although copies normally suffice in most circumstances.

They do not want your girlfriend to misuse your senior discount.

It's not about using your Rabbit card, your passport is required when topping it up with money.

Doesn't apply on the BTS, only the MRT!

I could have been clearer, sorry. Besides using the card for BTS trips and the odd purchase, I also topped up my Rabbit card at a BTS station on Thursday.

They just took my cash as per usual, they didn't ask for my passport.

As I use the card pretty much on a daily basis, I usually top it up every 1-2 weeks.

In my case I didn't even want to top up with money, but just use my rabbit reward points for 3 free trips.

My passport expiry date is October 2026, so that could be a point that they start check the passport again when expiry date is nearer than 1 year?

Btw, I always top up via the My Rabbit app, never at the station, but for the reward points I had to go to the station counter.

Just happened to mine too, required several trips to sort out. Problem was exacerbated by old passport (to which card was registered) had corner removed by embassy and couldn't be read by the machine. They eventually had to give me a new card but then couldn't cancel the old one and transfer the balance. Whole thing was a Kafkaesque nightmare.

Earlier today another foreigner in front of me in the queue was told to go to Phayathai rabbit office with passport. Seems the scanners are having problems reading the passports, it's causing a lot of disruption at ticketing booths as staff can't deal with it quickly.

Can we register more than one Rabbit card to a specific ID/Passport?

It looks like the My Rabbit app can register/manage up to five (5) cards.

Regarding the Rabbit app, on a new/first-time installation, I can't get past the ID/Passport scan page.

I am Thai Citizen (allows one to move forward)

I am Foreigner (no response).

Mine also worked, but I couldn't top it up without a passport.  It had about 150 baht left on it and that's when I started looking for a quiet station with no queue for a top-up.  That was last Saturday at Ekkamai.  The card was less than 3 years old, registered with my passport post Covid.

Tried to get change or buy a ticket at the cashier at Silom BTS yesterday as I still haven't brought my passport with me.  Hopeless on both sides of the station because both cashiers on both sides were busy attempting to register Rabbit cards.  Lines 10-15 people deep.  Never occured to them to limit registration to one cashier and have the other provide the needed services for change and/or purchase of tickets.

Good cautionary tale...  If you're going to need a top-up, bring your passport that day and look around for a station that's not as busy as Sala Daeng (the BTS station that corresponds to the MRT Silom station).

If you need to transact any business in person at Siam, Asok, Sala Daeng, etc, you're generally in for a long queue even if they're not doing anything special.  In my case, I bypassed the queue at Asok and used my Rabbit Card to get on the BTS to Ekkamai, where there was no queue at all.  I had my passport with me because I'd just been to the bank.  As I have indicated above, the card worked fine.  I just couldn't top it up without my passport.

That's good to know. I also have a new passport, so I guess I'll just use up the balance of my Rabbit card and buy a new one with my new passport. It's pretty insane that they can't just update the passport number in their system for an existing card, just like everyone else (banks, mobile networks, immigration, etc.).

Yes, I have 2 Rabbit Cards registered to my passport, and both are in the My Rabbit App.

At least at Phaya Thai Service Center they can update the passport number for existing Rabbit Cards in the system, if you have a new passport. Not sure about normal BTS stations.

Yes, they updated to my new passport at Saladaeng yesterday.  They have stopped using the cashiers for registration there, for USA passports anyway, and took me to a kiosk on the walkway side going to the MRT station.  When I handed my passport to the cashier on the other side, both cashiers looked at each other with hopeless amusement and then one of them escorted me through the station to the proper place.  Looks like they have given up on the cashiers' attempts to scan the USA passports.  The other agent copied the info on my passport by hand.
