A pedestrian overpass collapsed onto a lorry and a pickup truck on Thep Ratthanakorn Road in Samut Prakan on Thursday morning, leaving people injured and trapped inside the vehicles. The incident caused major disruption as debris blocked all main lanes, prompting an urgent emergency response. Officials rushed to the scene to carry out rescues and begin an investigation.

The collapse occurred at about 09.25 on 18 December 2025, according to reports. The structure fell onto a lorry and a pickup traveling inbound on Thep Ratthanakorn Road, opposite Nam Thai Market in Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan province.

Authorities confirmed that multiple people were injured and trapped inside the damaged vehicles. Rescue personnel from relevant agencies were dispatched immediately to assist those inside and to secure the area. Traffic on the road was completely obstructed across all main lanes due to the fallen overpass and wreckage.

Thep Ratthanakorn Road is a key route through Samut Prakan, and the collapse led to significant congestion in the surrounding area. Motorists were advised to avoid the stretch while rescue and clearance operations were affected under way. Officials prioritized freeing trapped occupants and preventing further risks at the scene.

Initial reports did not provide details on the cause of the collapse or the number and severity of injuries. Investigators moved to assess the condition of the pedestrian overpass and examine the circumstances leading up to the incident. The area remained under control of emergency services as checks continued.

Further updates are expected once all injured parties are rescued and transferred for medical treatment. Authorities will continue to investigate the cause of the collapse and assess any broader safety implications for pedestrian infrastructure in the area. Traffic management and repairs will follow once the site is declared safe.

With all the construction going on at the same time, especially in Bangkok and Samut Prakan... They do to much. rather than completing an area they stop in one place and move further down and then return . An accident waiting to happen with these roads, highways and overpasses.

A pedestrian footbridge collapsed on the inbound Bang Na–Trat Road towards Bangkok on 18 December 2025, leaving one person dead and another critically injured. The incident caused major disruption as emergency services closed parts of the carriageway to manage the scene and assist the victims.

According to initial findings at the scene, a ten-wheel dump truck was travelling along Bang Na–Trat Road when its raised dump bed lifted unexpectedly for reasons not yet known. The raised bed struck the pedestrian footbridge with significant force, causing a section of the bridge beam to break free and fall onto the roadway.

image.png

The falling beam landed on a pickup truck transporting eggs that was travelling behind in the same lane at speed. The driver of the pickup truck was killed instantly at the scene due to the impact. The driver of the ten-wheel dump truck sustained critical injuries and was rushed to hospital by emergency responders.

Witnesses said the ten-wheel truck had been driving normally before the dump bed suddenly lifted without warning. They believed the driver may not have realised what had happened in time to avoid hitting the footbridge, leading to the sudden and devastating collapse.

Authorities have begun a formal investigation into the cause of the incident, including whether a mechanical failure or other factors caused the dump bed to rise. Traffic police warned motorists to avoid the area where possible and to follow diversion routes while clearance and inspections continue.

Key Takeaways

• A pedestrian footbridge on Bang Na–Trat Road collapsed on 18 December 2025 after being struck by a raised dump truck bed.

• One pickup truck driver was killed at the scene, while the dump truck driver was critically injured and hospitalised.

• Authorities have closed lanes, cleared debris, and launched an investigation into the exact cause of the accident.

UPDATE
Pedestrian Bridge Collapse Kills One on Bang Na–Trat Road

image.jpeg

A pedestrian overpass collapsed onto vehicles on Highway 34 (Theparat Road) in Samut Prakan on 18 December 2025, killing one person and injuring another and causing major traffic disruption on the inbound route to Bangkok. The structure fell onto a pickup truck and a dump truck near kilometre marker 34+500, opposite Nam Thai Market in Bang Bo district. Authorities closed lanes and urged motorists to avoid the Bang Na–Trat inbound carriageway while recovery work continued.

The incident occurred when a dump truck with its tipping bed raised struck the side of the pedestrian bridge, causing the span to fall. Local residents said the overpass is normally heavily used, but no pedestrians were crossing at the moment of collapse, preventing further casualties.

image.png

The deceased was identified as Mr Num, 57, an employee of an egg delivery shop in Samut Sakhon province. He had collected eggs from a farm in Chachoengsao and was transporting them back to Samut Sakhon when the bridge fell onto his pickup truck. One injured person was taken to Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital in Bang Na.

At 11.30am on 18 December 2025, Samut Prakan Governor Supamit Chinasri inspected the site and confirmed one death and one injury. He said traffic reopening was delayed because two cranes were insufficient to lift the collapsed structure, which weighs between 60 and 70 tonnes, and a third crane was being brought in. He advised drivers heading into Bangkok to use alternative routes until clearance operations were completed later in the day.

image.png

The dump truck driver sustained injuries and has now been detained for legal proceedings. According to police, the truck had been used for carrying soil to a nearby U-turn construction site less than one kilometre from the crash location and witnesses reported the tipping bed had been seen raised several times before becoming stuck while the vehicle was driven.

Highways Department Director-General Piyapong Jiwatthankunpaisal said the damaged section of the bridge is about 15–16 metres long. He explained the bridge was designed to bear vertical loads, not lateral impact and confirmed the collapse was caused by the raised dump body striking the side of the structure. The department has filed a police complaint at Bang Phli Noi Police Station and will assess whether the remaining structure can be repaired or must be demolished and rebuilt.

image.jpeg

Khoasod reported that the pedestrian bridge was built at a cost of approximately 10 million baht. Engineers will evaluate the remaining structure, with damage currently assessed on the inbound side only and repairs will be expedited to restore safe crossings for the public.

Key Takeaways

• A raised dump truck struck a pedestrian bridge on Highway 34, causing it to collapse and kill one person.

• Authorities detained the truck driver and are assessing structural damage to decide on repair or reconstruction.

• Traffic on the Bang Na–Trat inbound route was disrupted as heavy lifting equipment cleared the site.

That driver should have known he was driving with it raised. Kind of hard to ignore unless sleeping at the wheel. I hope the family gets some compensation for their loss..

What an idiot. Should never have been behind the wheel of this vehicle to cause such damage

An overpass collapse on the Bang Na-Trat expressway in Samut Prakan, Thailand, has led to injuries and at least one fatality. The incident occurred inbound to Bangkok at kilometre 34 in the Bangpleenoi subdistrict. Emergency teams responded quickly, utilizing hydraulic tools and cranes to manage the scene and aid victims.

Surveillance footage showed an 18-wheel dump truck with its bed raised, hitting the overpass and causing it to fall onto a dump truck loaded with soil and a pickup truck carrying eggs. The driver of the pickup truck, identified as 59-year-old Sangwian, was killed when the cab was crushed under the beam. The dump truck driver, 65-year-old Leuchai, was trapped and injured, requiring over two hours for rescue teams to free him and transport him to the hospital.

Bystander Cherdchai, a motorcycle taxi driver, observed other drivers honking to warn the dump truck as its bed was lifted, but their warnings went unheard. The overpass collapse happened about 200 metres later, resulting in immediate chaos on the roadway. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation urged the public to stay clear of the area and redirected traffic to a parallel road.

As authorities conduct investigations and structural assessments, the closure of the affected road is expected to last around three hours. Measures will be coordinated to ensure a detailed inspection and the collection of evidence for subsequent legal actions, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • A pickup truck driver was killed, and a dump truck driver injured when an overpass collapsed.
  • The collapse was triggered by an 18-wheel dump truck hitting the overpass.
  • Authorities are investigating and have rerouted traffic to ease congestion.

Wonder who the contractor was for these bridges...

I know someone who was the PM recently who had a contractor company... but that is one thing, I don't understand that on the video the problem was already before the pedestrian bridge and why did he  not stop or even try to stop....just driving through.

For clarity, the dump truck mentioned in posts as "carrying soil" was empty at the time, and its raised empty bed hit the overpass, causing it to collapse onto the cab. Only two vehicles involved, with the driver of the dump truck in the left hand lane that hit the overpass seriously injured, and the pickup driver, in the right hand lane, killed.

Possibly a (dump truck) driver education issue? These trucks can move with the bed raised as that's how they operate on construction sites to empty the bed. One would think there's a speed-related interlock to prevent these being raised on the road, but having seen videos of this happening on US freeways and elsewhere, probably not.

Perhaps he is the one who passed away.
Is this another example of the “Mai Pen Rai” custom?

Very unfortunate incident. You can lose your life in Thailand in the most random and unusual ways, at least the death of the other driver was instant and without any suffering.

How difficult can it be to install an alarm that's sounded when the vehicle moves with the trailer raised .

But people being people they would no doubt disengage it 🫩

I can imagine a driver flying down the highway with the tipper bed raised, getting increasingly annoyed with other drivers beeping their horns at him while feverishly trying to mute that bloody annoying reversing alarm...

No, he's alive, albeit seriously injured, so he has time to come up with something original like brake failure.

The degree of recklessness the driver of this truck showed by driving with the bed in a vertical position is unforgivable. His truck should be impounded, his license permanently revoked, and he should be made to pay restitution to the family of the dead man, then locked up for 10 years. The highway patrol should also be held responsible for not patrolling the highways.

So the egg guy sees the truck with its bed raised, but just keep driving.

Instant darwin award.

Well I don't believe for one instant it "suddenly" raised, these tippers should/and can be designed as so not to be able to select any gear, with the PTO engaged, with modern ones being air switched, then the button should have a guard around it so it can not be pushed/pulled accidently........:coffee1:

I have seen dash cam footage  clearly showing the lorry hitting the foot bridge with its tipper in the raised position..

Why?

The bridge was smashed into by a lorry. What has that got to do with the sky train??

Yeah. Surely deserves some kind of award, because not only was there no outside force, but clearly it was because of a construction defect. Clearly.

Didn’t you watch the video????? Dump truck either bed fully up drove into it.  Brain the size of a flea in that truck driving farmer.  His family should work for the rest of their lives to take care of the dead pickup truck driver’s family.
