Who stole my bike? Help me find the Soi 8 Christmas thief!

Featured Replies

Here's an important job for the ASEAN NOW sleuths! As the attached photos and videos show, someone stole my bicycle from my apartment block at the far end of Soi 8, Sukhumvit. This happened at 2.40am on Sunday morning.

It took my landlady a few days to review the security camera footage, so we've only just pinpointed the culprit. As you can see, a man rides into the apartment block car park, acting suspiciously. He is riding a different bike. He then abandoned this good-quality bike, for reasons unknown.

Then he goes straight over to my bicycle and rides away on it. My bike was a brand-new, good-quality one. It appears the thief knew what he was going to steal in advance.

I will file a report at the police station soon, but I don't expect the boys in brown to leap into action and collar the thief. So any help you guys can offer would be much appreciated.

I realize this is very much a long shot, of course...but you never know!

It would be great if I could send this to the TV news companies. Another long shot, but they do like to run such clips on the news. So if anyone has a good contact with these organizations, please let me know.

As a result of this, I am now in possession of another bike, as pictured I presume this was also stolen, as it's a good bike. If you know of someone who has lost such a bike recently, let me know. (Of course, if anyone makes a claim on that, I'll let the police handle it).

So thanks in advance for your ideas, tips, and suggestions - it's a puzzle to keep you guys busy over Christmas!

Why didn’t you lock it to the pillar or a post, as it appears to be a free item for anyone walking by who lacks moral judgment. Anyway, hope you get it back.

Looks to me like a gated private property, so nobody "walks by"

In hindsight, locking the bike up would have been a good idea. But this end of Soi 8 is so quiet and peaceful, it was hard to imagine anything bad happening. I've lived here for 10 years without any incidents of crime.

But as I've just discovered, there's always a first!

So what you’re saying is that the perpetrator lives there?

No what I said is that he entered a private property on purpose, since he had to open the gate

Peaceful quiet areas are prime targets for crooks at 02.40 am in the morning

English seems to not be your first language, if so then you are forgiven.

I think you mean, any incidents of crime to you.

So many think TH is safe & crime free, just because it's not in the news they read or see.  People have walls & barred windows for a reason.   Oh well, lesson learned.

Good Luck getting it back, and probably a local thief.

He doesn't live here, but I suspect he had some 'inside knowledge.' Passers by would not see the bike. He had to have known about it in advance - which is also clear from the way he acted.

If that is the case, then he/she (looks tomboy-ish) probably knows someone there. Though crooks tend to scour areas pretty well like cockroaches in the night. We live in a very quiet area and there’s no history of theft in the area as far as we know, though still, everyone in the muban keeps everything locked up pretty well because drunks get loose when the bars close.

Glued under the saddle within a piece of old inner tube and inside the handlebars.

Thanks , those need to be removed and disposed of as soon as possible, preferably before riding off

Sorry, and I am of no practical help but I can post this on the Thailand and Bangkok  groups on reddit and facebook? I'm not clear from your pics which one is yours and which the one that was left?  Could you clarify that and give descriptions of any/all additional identifying features for both bikes? If you can do that I'll put it up on some different forums.

I guess at least until there's any resolution you've still got a bike to go about on. Even if the owner spotted you ( unlikely) you are genuinely trying to locate them and have proof. This post here for one example.

Good luck with that, but honestly Nick I recommend buying over nicking.

Pun intended.

Chomper, why you closet right-winger, lol!!!   The poor lad probably doesn't have naught for transportation (public or private) due to the inequities built into the modern capitalist system.    When he nicks Nick's bike, he's able to get to a 14 hour a day job for 200 baht a day and provide a bit of food for his extended family of 15.

Or he could be arrested for riding the previously stolen bike the thief left behind :coffee1:

Doubt it as he has proof his bike was nicked and dated proof, just even on here, as I said that he trying to recover his own bike and seek out the owner of the bike left in its stead. It 'may' after all not be stolen. Thief just fancied an upgrade and couldn't ride both away. Dunno and neither does the op. Just as easy to think this was a dishonest 'swop'.

Does your bike have front wheel suspension ?

As I often go off road

Oh that’s what wandering

off track is called these days.

That sucks. If you're in a big city with millions of people I would keep the bike indoors next time. I keep mine outside at night too but it's not in visible sight on a street and there's only a few thousand people that live here. Maybe I'll regret that because mine is assembled from parts, domestic and foreign and it would take a long time to get it back.

If I were you I'd just get a new one and move on since it's so unlikely to get back.
