General Prawit Wongsuwan has withdrawn as the No.1 prime ministerial nominee of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), with Labour Minister and party secretary-general Trinuch Thienthong named to replace him. The decision, announced on 24 December 2025, immediately reshapes the party’s leadership line-up ahead of the general election while confirming that Prawit will remain party leader.

The announcement was made at 13.50 on 24 December at the PPRP headquarters by Paiboon Nititawan, the party’s deputy leader, following a meeting of the executive committee. Paiboon said the meeting considered party-list and constituency candidates, as well as the party’s prime ministerial nominees.

Prawit requested to step aside as a PM nominee due to health problems, according to Paiboon, who said the party had agreed to replace him with Trinuch as the No.1 candidate. The No.2 PM nominee will be Theerachai Phuwanatnaranubala, a party deputy leader.

The executive committee also agreed to field more than 200 constituency candidates nationwide. For the party-list, the committee authorised Prawit, as party leader, to determine the ranking, with the full list due to be unveiled on 28 December.

Asked whether Prawit would continue as party leader, Paiboon confirmed that he would. He added that Prawit must still sign certification documents for both constituency and party-list candidates, dismissing speculation that he was stepping back entirely.

Paiboon said Prawit had cited health reasons for withdrawing as a PM nominee, stating that his health “is not very good”. He rejected media speculation that Prawit would soon hand over the party leadership to Trinuch, saying such analysis did not reflect the party’s position.

Addressing reports of internal instability and members leaving the party, Paiboon said similar rumours had circulated for years. He insisted the party remained strong and confirmed that it would field candidates widely, including in Bangkok, despite the recent departure of Wan Yuam-am.

Paiboon said he was unaware of the membership status of Chalerm Yubamrung and declined to comment on the resignation of Seksakol Atthawong. He expressed confidence that PPRP was ready to contest the election, adding that the party’s approach might differ from others but remained robust.

Khoasod reported that candidate registration for constituency seats is scheduled for 27 December, followed by party-list registration on 28 December. Paiboon said the public would soon see the full slate of candidates and the confirmed PM nominee order.

Key Takeaways

• General Prawit withdrew as PPRP’s No.1 PM nominee due to health reasons but remains party leader.

• Trinuch Thienthong is now the party’s top PM nominee, with Theerachai Phuwanatnaranubala as No.2.

• PPRP plans to field over 200 constituency candidates and unveil its party-list rankings on 28 December.

Thai politics loss is journalist white clear boxing's gain?

This is an absolute miracle for Thailand, the last thing in the world this nation needs is a regressive ultra rich dinosaur. We need progressive, younger people who can lead Thailand into the 21st century.

The guy couldn't sit, stand or walk unaided.

It's well beyond time for him to retire.

I hope they aren't giving him a watch as a retirement gift, he's got enough.
