Prasat (Neuro) Hospital in Chiang Mai for eye trauma?

Featured Replies

A young friend is in McCormick Hospital after a head trauma yesterday.

The CT scan showed some small bleeding in the brain, the neurosurgeon said it's nothing for surgery.  He is fully conscious, can talk.

But he also has some bleeding behind one eye, and double vision, and the ophthalmologist wants to refer him to Prasat Hospital,  supposedly they have eye specialists.

Money is no object,  and I am wondering whether Bangkok  Hospital or Ram wouldn't be a better choice? Who will be actually working, anyway?

It's actually the Chiangmai Neurological Hospital, specialised also focused on brain disorders.

There is also a specialised clinic called St. Peter Eye Clinic.

Thats why I am surprised that the ophthalmologist wants to bring him there for eye treatmenr

It is impossible to comment on this without knowing the differential diagnosis and specifically which type of opthalmologist he is being referred to.

It is possible that he is being referred to a neuro-opthalmologist. Has a specific  doctor or clinic been recommended or contacted?

Bangkok Hospital Chinag Mai has very limited number of opthalmologists and no neuro-opthalmologists on staff. Ram has more opthalmologists but no specialists in neuro-opthalmology.

I would suggest to follow the recommendations of the referring doctor, at least initially. If not satisfied, there is a neuro-opthalmology clinic at Maharaj Nakorn and several neuro-opthalmologists at Sriphat.

Services will likely be curtailed from the 31st but should be OK Mon & Tues.

As I don't know the diagnose there might be a brain/nerve/injury. So to have it sorted it might be a good idea to have it reviewed by a specialist.

Therefore Chiangmai Neurological Hospital. A good choice.

They now say, they are not sure where to bring him, but should be an oculoplastic surgeon.  Because he has a fractured orbita wall. According to their eye doctor,  the double vision is not a neurological problem.

The family is supposed to choose the hospital together with their eye doctor on Monday - it's probably best to follow his recommendation.

Bangkok Hospital Chiang Mai lists 3 oculoplastic surgeons on their website (no idea, whether they will be actually working during the holiday period):

Dr Praelada Wongsirimetee

Dr Suphitcha Pantarote

Dr Laddawan Methakittrakul

All seem to be from Chiang Mai University, and normally work in Bangkok Hospital once or twice a week. So, maybe Sriphat is a better option.

Any recommendations?

Well, I recommended before already the St. Peter Eye Clinic, These ophthalmologists got a lot of International experience. Tel. 053 225 011

stpeter-eye.com. Check it out.

However, Sriphat is an option too.
