Police General Surachate 'Big Joke' Hakparn

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has gathered significant evidence in a bribery case involving former deputy national police chief Surachate Hakparn. On 5 January, senior police officials will present their findings. The investigation focuses on allegations that Surachate facilitated the delivery of 246 baht of gold bars to a National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) member involved in his case.

The transactions reportedly used intermediaries to hide direct involvement. Leading the probe are CIB's Deputy Commissioner Pol Maj Gen Jruykiat Pankaeo and Anti-Corruption Division Commander Pol Maj Gen Prasong Chalampan. They have assembled extensive evidence, including CCTV footage, audio recordings, photographs, financial documents, and testimonies from state officials and business operators. The police are confident this evidence justifies further legal proceedings.

Witnesses came forward after experiencing intimidation and violence, backed by medical records of their injuries. The investigation also examines a university lecturer's role in advising Surachate on social media strategies, possibly to tarnish rivals. This aspect of the inquiry continues, with three summonses already issued to civilian suspects, and Surachate acknowledging the charges.

Cases involving NACC officials will undergo a special legal process. Upon completing evidence collection, the police will hand over the case to the NACC, who may escalate it to the House Speaker and Supreme Court President for an independent inquiry panel. Pol. Maj. Gen. Jruykiat emphasised the importance of impartial law enforcement and transparency, stating the Royal Thai Police will not shield any guilty officers, according to the Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • The CIB has collected critical evidence in Surachate's bribery case.

  • Allegations involve delivering 246 baht in gold to an NACC member.

Of course they have evidence, they all have their fingers in the pot, one of their own steps out of line, they offer him up to the masses as a sacrificial lamb. Meanwhile, they carry on with the corruption, and the money keeps flowing to the top dogs. Rinse ....Repeat.

Dangerous move for those accusing him, he knows where the bodies are.

I said all along he was just another cog in the wheel, no different from the rest of them, even as others on here offered him up as the best cop in Thailand and worthy of leading the police force.

They are all rotten.

It appears to be a power struggle between the national police chief and Big Joke. When the latter became head of Immigration, he exposed a scandal involving the procurement of automated passport control machines at Suvarnabhumi Airport. After that, a number of strange things happened: he lost his job, was reassigned to the then Prime Minister Prayut’s office, and his car was shot at while parked on the street.

He later returned from the cold and was one of two candidates for the position of national police chief. Then came allegations of illegal casino operations and money laundering. Big Joke was once regarded as the good guy.

Either he is just as rotten as everyone else, or he has stepped on the toes of someone very powerful.

One does not exclude the other, you know….

As a statistician would say: They are not mutually exclusive. :-)

Since I am a (retired) statistician, that’s what I wrote first. But I wasn’t sure everyone would understand.

Both.

It is going to be interesting. But willit be resolved quickly I think not.

Someone is going to say enough and end this not beacause of where it is going but who it is gongto affect.

This is just a police matter; eventually, it is going to go inthe direction of rich and powerful people who back these people.
