In the early hours of January 7th, a devastating fire erupted on a speedboat at Chalong Bay pier, Chalong Subdistrict, Phuket. Within moments, flames engulfed at least 10 boats docked nearby, escalating into a chaotic scene. Officials and firefighting boats quickly responded but faced immense challenges in containing the fast-spreading blaze.

The fire began around 4:00 a.m., igniting panic and urgency as local agencies mobilised to tackle the emergency. Despite their rapid response, the fire's intensity proved difficult to manage, posing risks to other vessels and the broader area. Thankfully, initial reports indicate no casualties, although the situation remains tense.

Authorities are continuing efforts to control the conflagration while safely moving undamaged boats away to prevent further loss. The area has been cordoned off, ensuring public safety as investigations begin. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and experts are already speculating about the full impact on local maritime operations.

The immediate task for officials is to fully extinguish the fire and assess the damage. While the source remains unclear, attention now shifts to evaluating the total losses and planning how to restore affected services. As investigations unfold, the focus is on preventing future incidents and understanding the ramifications for the local community, reported Daily News.

I was told 23 boats. Apparently there eas oil on the water that ignited somehow.

In a way, disturbing that modern boats burn so easy, including what looks like quite dangerous smoke...🫢

Oil on the water would not ignite. Gasoline would, however it would burn the hulls before the interior of the boats. Hard to say from the pictures but the boats look well distanced apart - wind is blowing though. My guess, and only a guess, multiple cases of arson. Just a hunch. Unlikely insurance job I would suspect disgruntled competitor or customer or some other grievance. Pure speculation with what has been reported.

Fiberglass /foam/resin construction and improper storage of flammables?

Speculation on my part.

Knowing the owners of some of those boats, arson is very unlikely. Retribution would be quick.

Did someone forget to pay the right protection people?

I am so jaded. The first thought that came to mind is that some boat-owner didn't pay-up after losing a racing bet and is being gently reminded about that debt.

Eliminating the competition the look of it

My heart goes out to the guys who have just lost their livelihoods. Even if there is insurance cover, the safety net isn't that comprehensive and I doubt they'll come out anywhere close to whole.

It's just fortunate that nobody seems to have been seriously hurt or killed.

Can't you see the flames being blown almost horizontally by the high wind towards the next boats?

"Witnesses said they heard an explosi when the fire erupted on a speedboat at the pier in Muang district at 4am, and strong winds spread the flames to adjacent craft.

Phuket Governor Nirat Pongsitthithaworn said 22 speedboats belonging to 13 different operators had all been refuelled and readied to serve tourists in the morning".
