Phuket Landowner Proposes New Terminal to Ease Airport Strain

The potential expansion of Phuket International Airport has been proposed by the owner of a large land plot, according to a report in the Thai Rath newspaper today, January 9. With an anticipated boom in tourism and growing demand from airlines for more landing allowances, the aviation industry is prepping for significant growth in 2026. However, Phuket Airport, like other key Thai airports, is already experiencing high air traffic, leading to potential development benefits.

Phuket Airport currently operates beyond capacity, with 31 parking bays and frequent aircraft delays. Geographical limitations, such as its proximity to the sea and surrounding hills, restrict its expansion. However, the owner of a 500-rai plot next to the airport has approached the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) about transforming the land into an aircraft maintenance and operations centre, complete with a new passenger terminal and extra parking bays.

ACM Manat Chavanaprayoon, director of CAAT, confirmed the proposal discussions. The landowner suggests a model where Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) could lease the land or enter into a public-private partnership (PPP). Additionally, a connecting road is part of the plans to enhance access to the proposed site. The landowner is seeking government and Transport Ministry approval before proceeding with what could be a significant investment within two years.

The Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, has been briefed on the proposal. The expansion could relieve current traffic pressures and potentially set a precedent for similar developments at other Thai airports, pending government support, reported Thai Newsroom.

Key Takeaways:

  • A 500-rai land plot owner has proposed an expansion at Phuket Airport.

  • The project includes maintenance facilities, a new terminal, and 50 parking bays.

  • Government and Transport Ministry approval is awaited to move forward.

Now I wonder who this public spirited 'landowner' is ...

Sounds like someone wanting to sell a piece of land. Can't blame him if he wants to sell, to try this way.

Basically wants to rob them blind to sell his land 😂👍

Wonder if this person has other land he could sell that might lead to better roads, rail and the other critical infrastructure that is needed to support the current residents/tourists, let alone any more?

The reality is land next to an airport is best suited to airport use because of noise 24/7.
