January 21Jan 21 Do you remember the happy times we had, back in the day, when posts accumulated Heineken Greenies and McEwans Export Reddies?Certain symbols mean different things to different people, but the multitude of reddies my posts accumulated reminded me of travelling back from England to the Old Country, on the High Speed Trains. I'd get on the train mid-way, and look for a seat. Out of preference, I'd take the a seat at a table of four. None of your neighbours would say anything. It was still a four hour journey to go, Three hours fifty, maybe. Three and a half, by the time we got to Preston, and I've had enough of this. "I've brought you Export", I'd say on my return from the buffet car, and all I'd get wqs a polite 'Thank you' and some quiet supping."I'm just off to the toilet" someone would say, as we pulled out of Lancaster, and he'd come back with four more cans. You'd take him at his word, and check that your can was sealed, and a bit of polite conversation might break out, with the occasional digression into discussion. By the time the guy had come back from the buffet after Carlisle, we'd be well into banter, and as we approached Motherwell, the last man would be saying "I'd better get them in quickly!", and we'd all pile off at Glasgow Central best of friends, still ignorant of each others' names, to never meet again. I can't imagine what it is like getting the train from Birmingham or London.
