Tourist police on Koh Phangan have located and assisted a British national who went missing after losing his wallet and bank cards, ensuring his safe return to the British Embassy in Bangkok on 22 January 2026. The man was found exhausted on a beach, given immediate care and supported through his onward journey home.

The case involved Mr Michael Nicholas Lee, 45, a British citizen, after the British Embassy in Thailand requested assistance due to concerns raised by his family. Mr Lee had reported that he had lost his wallet and ATM cards, leaving him without money and out of contact for a period, prompting fears for his welfare.

According to Pol Lt Col Winij Boonchit, Inspector at Tourist Police Station 5, Division 2, Tourist Police Bureau 3, officers were acting under orders from Tourist Police Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Saksira Pueak-am. Tourist police on Koh Phangan were tasked with locating Mr Lee as quickly as possible following the embassy’s coordination request.

Officers spread out to search hotels and key tourist locations across the island before locating Mr Lee seated on a beach. He was found in a weakened condition, having gone without food and drinking water for an extended period and was immediately assisted by police.

Mr Lee was taken to the Koh Phangan Tourist Police Service Centre, where officers provided food, drinking water and temporary accommodation for one night to allow him to recover. Police then informed the British Embassy that he had been found safely and began arranging his return to Bangkok.

Tourist police coordinated travel assistance with Lomprayah High Speed Ferries Co Ltd, which provided complimentary transport to Bangkok for the entire journey. Officers also collected a small sum of money to give Mr Lee for expenses during travel and coordinated with tourist police in Bangkok to receive him and escort him safely to the British Embassy.

Matichon reported that following the assistance, Mr Lee and his family expressed deep appreciation for the Thai authorities. Mr Lee said he was impressed by the speed, friendliness and care shown by Thai police and stated that he would encourage British travellers to visit Thailand, citing confidence in the country’s safety and official support, before flying back to the United Kingdom.

Well done to the Tourist Police. A very kind gesture.

Glad it all turned out ok. But it seems like this bloke didn’t have much of a clue what to do once he lost his personal belongings. Sleeping on a beach and not eating for several days doesn’t seem much of a survival strategy.

Hardly Bear Grylls was he. If he was part of my family I wouldn’t trust him to round the corner shop

Just saying

Strange story. How does a 45 year old man manage to plan a trip to Thailand, get on a plane and yet not be able to manage to take care of himself after losing his wallet to the point that he has to be rescued after not eating or drinking anything.

Strange indeed. He’s a 45 year old man ffs, not a child. Why didn’t he go report the loss of his wallet to the police like any normal adult would’ve done. Language wouldn’t have been an issue, if nobody at the station spoke good English they could get the tourist police to come and assist. I can’t help thinking there’s more to this incident that has been released.

He’s a Brit.

Children with special needs should not travel unaccompanied.

.... And the embassy will certainly not provide financial assistance. So what is the plan?
