How great was Obama?

I must admit as a Centrist Democrat I had a lot of issues with this guy while he was president and unlike a lot of Republicans today I was very willing to criticize him for that, however in comparison to the current occupant he was a man of incredible elegance, eloquence tremendous oratorial skills, and a man that made me quite proud to be American.

And people forget how much he accomplished in 8 years.

"Trump supporters say, 'We suffered 8 years under Barack Obama.'

Fair enough. Let’s take a look.

The day Obama took office, the Dow closed at 7,949 points. Eight years later, the Dow had almost tripled.

General Motors and Chrysler were on the brink of bankruptcy, with Ford not far behind, and their failure, along with their supply chains, would have meant the loss of millions of jobs. Obama pushed through a controversial, $80 billion bailout to save the car industry. The U.S. car industry survived, started making money again, and the entire $80 billion was paid back, with interest.

While we remain vulnerable to lone-wolf attacks, no foreign terrorist organization has successfully executed a mass attack here since 9/11.

Obama ordered the raid that killed Osama Bin Laden.

He drew down the number of troops from 180,000 in Iraq and Afghanistan to just 15,000, and increased funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

He launched a program called Opening Doors which, since 2010, has led to a 47 percent decline in the number of homeless veterans. He set a record 73 straight months of private-sector job growth.

Due to Obama’s regulatory policies, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 12%, production of renewable energy more than doubled, and our dependence on foreign oil was cut in half.

He signed The Lilly Ledbetter Act, making it easier for women to sue employers for unequal pay.

His Omnibus Public Lands Management Act designated more than 2 million acres as wilderness, creating thousands of miles of trails and protecting over 1,000 miles of rivers.

He reduced the federal deficit from 9.8 percent of GDP in 2009 to 3.2 percent in 2016.

For all the inadequacies of the Affordable Care Act, we seem to have forgotten that, before the ACA, you could be denied coverage for a pre-existing condition and kids could not stay on their parents’ policies up to age 26.

Obama approved a $14.5 billion system to rebuild the levees in New Orleans.

All this, even as our own Mitch McConnell famously asserted that his singular mission would be to block anything President Obama tried to do.

While Obama failed on his campaign pledge to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, that prison’s population decreased from 242 to around 50.

He expanded funding for embryonic stem cell research, supporting ground breaking advancement in areas like spinal injury treatment and cancer.

Credit card companies can no longer charge hidden fees or raise interest rates without advance notice.

Most years, Obama threw a 4th of July party for military families. He held babies, played games with children, served barbecue, and led the singing of “Happy Birthday” to his daughter Malia, who was born on July 4.

Welfare spending was down: for every 100 poor families, just 24 receive cash assistance, compared with 64 in 1996.

Obama comforted families and communities following more than a dozen mass shootings. After Sandy Hook, he said, “The majority of those who died today were children, beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old.”

Yet, he never took away

anyone’s guns........

He sang Amazing Grace, spontaneously, at the altar.

He was the first president since Eisenhower to serve two terms without personal or political scandal.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

President Obama was not perfect, as no man and no president is, and you can certainly disagree with his political ideologies. But to say we suffered?

If that’s the argument, if this is how we suffered for 8 years under Barack Obama, I have one wish:

may we be so fortunate as to suffer 8 more."

How soon you forget what his first Administration was like and the destruction is only beginning this time around, he is on course to wreck America completely.

I think many of his appointees just sort of come along for the ride and what appears to be a certain amount of prestige in the appointed position, and most of them eventually lose faith and realize what a ridiculous man their boss truly is, and they get thrown under the bus, or they display a shred of morality and leave on their own.

This list is incomplete but it's just a partial group of people who either resigned on their own or were fired during his first administration, and there's no doubt that that list will grow significantly during this second fiasco of an administration.

Well said

Seen with European eyes, he is the best man in seat ever in my life.

Good character, good speaker, someone's ideals few can live up to, and a fantastic first Lady.

The only I regret with his presidency, he accepted the Nobel Peace Price, given by an idealistic Committee, with biased Agenda.

Obama was a true statesman who respected institutions, exercised restraint, accepted accountability, and governed with discipline, empathy, and regard for the whole country — qualities that made him arguably the most popular president since Dwight D. Eisenhower.

What’s often omitted is that Obama took office mid-collapse, inheriting the Bush-era Global Financial Crisis, and stabilised the economy before it tipped into a full depression.

In doing so, he saved the financial system and spared Bush the historical legacy of presiding over an economic implosion.

That context explains why so many of the later gains — job growth, auto-industry recovery, deficit reduction, and market expansion — were even possible.

Without it, critics pretend Obama simply walked into a booming economy.

He didn’t — he rebuilt one.

Obama ranks up there in the Top 3 worse presidents in my lifetime. Making life worse for almost every Yank, by getting ACA passed into law. Not a fan of him bailing out the bankers & stock brokers.

LBJ ... probably responsible for send more Yanks to their death than anyone.

Cheney / Bush 2 ... killing & displacing more people than any other, along with killing or ruining1000s of Yank's lives.

Incredibly biased and as usual, devoid of facts.

Obama inherited a literal worldwide financial meltdown from yet again a GOP administration but safely navigated not only the US but the world away from another Great Depression. He didn’t create the problem (that would be the GOP who have overseen 12 of the last 14 recessions) but he absolutely sorted it out.

And the ACA was at least some attempt to sort Americas ridiculous health system - what Republican has even come up with an alternative never mind a better plan in the last 12 years or so? NB that’s a rhetorical question.

Obama didn't have to do anything, to avoid the fake 'financial meltdown'. That's what the FDIC was for. How do you think all those non performing loans were possible ? The Dems policy of let's give everyone a loan that can't afford it.

ACA did little but make healthcare unaffordable, even with the now higher priced premiums that don't cover much.

No problem though, as long as he came away from it with 10s of millions of $$$$.

Yes, Obama inherited a mess caused by Clinton, and corrupt regulation of stocks. Along with greed of the bankers, he bailed out. FDIC would have bailed out the depositors, but not the investors, those with more than $250k in accounts. The banks themselves, would have been absorbed by more profitable institutions, or simply went belly up, the investors losing, not the depositors.

That's who got bailed out....

All smoke & mirrors, and the TARP fund didn't go to depositor, they were already protected by FDIC. The banks & stock brokers investors received most of TARP fund to lessen their losses. Homeowners still lost their houses through loan default & repossessions.

And make no mistake, Obama was compensated nicely by both, Wall St. & Healthcare/Insurance providers, for TARP & ACA. Net worth now 10s of millions of $$$$

The auto industry rescue alone was enough to make him a success as president.

The average Joe doesn't think about the suppliers.

Everything from paint to wiring to glass, computer chips, upholstery, nuts and bolts for mounting things in the cars' interior.

Not just the major mechanical parts.

To make sense of your posts — and assuming good faith:
How would FDIC alone have addressed a system-wide interbank credit freeze?
Which part of TARP directed funds to investors rather than stabilising banks?
Which CRA-regulated banks actually originated most toxic private-label MBS?
Is there data separating GSE-backed losses from private-label MBS/CDOs?
If major banks had failed, how would deposits, payrolls, and pensions have been protected?
Do post-presidency speaking fees establish intent at the time of crisis decisions?
What specific alternative policy could have stopped the 2008 credit seizure?

You do realise that it was the Bush administration with the then US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson that initiated TARP in October 2008, 3 months before Obama came to power or is that just again one of those facts you choose to conveniently ignore?

And if you REALLY want to talk about how the problems all started then you have to go back to yet another GOP President, Reagan who in 1982 significantly deregulated the banking industry with the Garn-St. Germain Depository Institutions Act, essentially allowing savings and loan institutions to engage in riskier commercial lending. After the financial crisis, Obama at least tried to re-regulate with the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act in June 2009 as a sweeping overhaul of the US financial system. But of course this was heavily diluted by your idol Trump who in 2018 rolled back Dodd-Frank rules for many banks.

You need to make your mind up - either you suport TARP or you don't. You've made a great song and dance about NOT supporting it through this thread, but when I point out it was Bush and not Obama you now loudly (in bold capitals no less) extol 'so it was Bush that saved the world from 'financial meltdown'.

And the VERY obvious point I and many on here are making which again you seem to want to ignore is literally on day 1 of his presidency, Obama inherited one of the worst financial crisises in modern history and instead of the meltdown it SHOULD have been, under his steady stewardship both the US and the world was expertly sheperded through the crisis - a crisis that once again was initiated under a GOP led government - just like the other 10 recessions (out of 11 post WW2) that started under GOP led administrations. https://www.jec.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/democrats/2024/10/the-u-s-economy-performs-better-under-democratic-presidents

But facts eh? Who needs them when you've got an echo chamber defeaning you to anything other than your own bias.

Your AI post collapses into a logic salad of category error, equivocation, false equivalence, red herring, statistical laundering, and whataboutism — drenched in MAGA non-reasoning.

Obama-era deaths in ICE custody were not due to ICE agents shooting people.

They were only custody deaths — medical events, suicide, etc — but zero people were killed by ICE gunfire.

Under Donald Trump 2.0, ICE agents have directly killed 5 people so far.

For comparison, this extrapolates to roughly 40 direct ICE killings over eight years.

Trump — the president of calculated and unnecessary death, cruelty, and chaos.

Never going to happen now.

But they would be justifiably criticized for having significantly undermined cancer-cure research through funding cuts, grant freezes, and program cancellations.
