You can use an agent and then do everything by mail. Or you can send someone on your behalf to submit the application and collect the new passport.

use an agent, they charge about 5000thb extra, but apart from signing an application form, there is nothing else for you to do, they do it all, i have used Thai visa express in pattaya, there are others, can all be done by post

Don't forget, however, that you'll be completely on your own in obtaining passport photos which comply fully with HMPO's ultra-fussy requirements, regardless of whether or not you use an agent. This can prove easier said than done in practice, particularly if you live in the boonies.

And, if your passport is due to expire within the next 12 months, I would strongly advise you to initiate its renewal sooner rather than later. Although the current turnaround time is, I gather, around 4 weeks, who knows what curveballs HMPO might lob into the whole process between now and then!

I did that because of the lengthy delays in getting a new passport (from Laos). I flew to the UK, took the train up to the Peterborough passport office, got my new passport without any problems, train back to London and back on the plane to Bangkok and then Luang Prabang.

Also used these guys, IIRC it was 12K all in for the jumbo passport.
