Things in Thailand That Still Surprise Me

Featured Replies

I just don't know why they do these things. Don't they think?

Why do farangs go to a wat in a near state of undress, and act disrespectfully? This German couple took the day's prize. Mr. Roly Poly showed up with his wife and decided to walk around the Wat. He was rather loud. He then decided it would be a good idea to take a photo of a monk.

I was at a well known local restaurant on the main road. This pickup truck with its bald tires and questionable brakes was picking up the beer bottle empties. The driver could barely see out his front windshield. 60%+ of the windshield was covered in stickers.

From where I live, cops would pull anyone over for a windshield covered in stickers. The bald tires would fail the yearly state inspection.

Definitely have to watch out for old guys driving old vehicles, driving low and slow, no indication, no looking properly, braking difficult with no brakes

Maybe he saw the gold statues of a half naked fat guy all around and thought he would join in?

Depending upon the place, the Whiskey Tango Look (White Trash) still surprises me.

On the street not so much, but yesterday I was in a nice hotel restaurant at breakfast time and there was a falang in a ratty t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and a generous supply of tattoos.

In the nice atmosphere of the restaurant he looked particularly low class.

How do you know the condition of the vehicle's brakes and how do you know that the driver could only see 40% out of the windscreen.? Your view into the vehicle does not equate to the driver's view to the outside.

What is the issue with his taking a photograph of a monk in a temple?

If you took that photograph of the couple you do realize that you were also taking a photograph of the monk, yes, so presumably your admonishment applies to yourself also?

How could you know from looking at a vehicle that it has no brakes?

...but, as a paying customer, he had as much entitlement to be there as you did, regardless of your opinion of his t-shirt or his"class".

Surely you are aware that one is expected to ask permission of the monk first. Mr. Roly Poly, waddled over to take the photo. I was observing.

My friend as picking up his lunch, and I was waiting outside. The 2 guys came out and got in their muffler deficient vehicle and drove away. The vehicle was visibly corroded, and the brakes squealed and made a grinding sound when they came down the slight incline to merge into traffic, and stopped as they waited to merge. I believe this supports the term QUESTIONABLE brakes. You are the one using the term no brakes, not me.

About a week ago, I was walking back from AIS, and was behind this guy. His feet were black with dirt. Does he not appreciate that Thai businesses and restaurants don't want him coming in with dirty feet like that? (And yes, he walked into a shop, after he tossed his cigarette butt on the ground.)Bare Feet.jpg

How oblivious can one be that the sidewalk in some sections is coated in bird feces, garbage, and has broken glass and metal fragments scattered about? Does Australia claim him?🤭

Its simply that “entitled feeling” that's very common amongst some foreigners, that we see every where.

There is no rule that permission has to be asked for first but, as you mentioned it, did you ask for the monk's permission when you took that photograph of the him that included the German tourists?
