A foreign national was left distressed after discovering that lottery tickets he believed had won a prize could not be redeemed, prompting a police complaint against the seller. The incident occurred after he attempted to claim winnings from the Thai Government Lottery for the draw dated 1 February 2026. The case has sparked warnings to the public to carefully check lottery ticket details before purchase.

According to reports on 3 February 2026, the man held two tickets with the number 829048, which matched the last two digits, 48, in the latest draw. He expected to receive prize money for both tickets when he visited the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC). However, bank staff later confirmed the tickets were from an earlier draw and therefore invalid.

The tickets were found to belong to the draw dated 17 January 2026, making them ineligible for redemption. The man had already written his name on the back of the tickets as part of the standard claiming process before learning the truth. The discovery caused him significant shock and some distress.

Background details were provided by the man’s wife, Mrs Boonchob, aged 60. She explained that in late January, she and her husband visited a shopping centre in Bueng Sam Phan district, Phetchabun province, where he bought the two tickets before entering the mall. She said neither of them checked the draw date at the time of purchase.

After the draw on 1 February 2026, the man checked the numbers and believed he had won. The following day, he went to BAAC to cash the tickets, only to be informed later that they were old and invalid. Mrs Boonchob also stated that three additional tickets bought at a market stall in Wang Phikun subdistrict were from the same outdated draw, though those tickets did not win any prize.

Mrs Boonchob said the incident had deeply upset her husband, who is a foreigner and felt embarrassed and misunderstood during the attempted claim. She stressed that her husband regularly buys lottery tickets each draw and had no intention of wrongdoing. The couple filed a police report to prevent similar incidents from happening to others.

Khoasod reported that she added that many people with limited income still buy lottery tickets in hope of winning, and being sold outdated tickets could cause severe disappointment, especially if a major prize were involved. She urged buyers to always check ticket dates carefully. Authorities are to investigate whether the sale of old tickets was intentional or accidental by the vendor.

Key Takeaways

• A foreign man could not cash winning lottery tickets after they were found to be from an earlier draw.

• The tickets were bought in Phetchabun province and dated 17 January 2026 instead of 1 February 2026.

• A police complaint was filed to warn others and prevent the sale of outdated lottery tickets.

A lesson to be learned from that one isn't there?

The last two numbers I don’t think pays out much at all does it TIT

If he only had the last two numbers it’s only 1000 baht on each minus little bit tax, I don’t think I’d be distressed a bit angry for being scammed.

The last 2 numbers pay 2000 baht per ticket. I won last year. I also won this year with the first 3 numbers which is worth 4000 baht. I typically buy a couple of tickets from an older couple here in town. She has no hands and he needs crutches to walk

If you're too dumb to read a date on a lottery ticket and to make sense of its meaning, then clearly you shouldn't be in the business of buying lottery tickets.

There's no reason that lottery ticket shouldn't be good for at least two or three months after the date of the lottery 3 weeks is absolutely ridiculous.

Hi Spider, I think the point is that the ticket he had was for an earlier draw week that did not win. I believe a winning ticket is valid for two years.

I thought he had won first prize because of the headline

If the guy is stressed out at not winning 2 numbers 2000 baht he must be low on income

Have heard of others buying the same outdated tickets before nothing new here

Check the date first saves disappointment later 😭

Unfortunate, but the onus is always on the buyer to make sure the tickets are legit. The strange thing about this report is that there is no mention of the seller involved. Surely selling out of date lottery tickets is illegal? Yet she seeks no justice against them or even getting his money back. There’s something fishy about this whole story.

I'm pretty sure lottery sellers have to turn in their unsold tickets otherwise they have to pay for them.

No returns and refunds, what ever ticket's are unsold the seller will take the hit.

The odds of getting the last 2 numbers right are 100/1

I would think the guy is not stressed out about not winning 2000 baht, but is more about seeking some justice against the scammer. Are you victim blaming?

You bet! I wonder if my Thai wife is aware the ticket vendors maybe selling stale tickets.

As far as selling by accident old tickets and most being a vendor 365 days a year using the excuse, that that lottery was drawn and were not aware it had been is absolutely 100% a fraud.

Especially as I am inundated with sellers in her small Buri Ram village when I come. Guess they look at me like another sucker. Yet I look to my wife to check out what I am buying. Works both ways.

He spent 500 baht so 3,500 baht profit. Still, a lot better than a 500 baht loss, if it had worked out.
