February 9Feb 9 A Google search shows that Rifaximin (brand name Risavie) is available in Thailand, but is it really available in pharmacies?FYI- it is an antibiotic for IBS.
February 9Feb 9 It would be great if it is finally available. It was available in hospitals in the past but only gastros knew of it / prescribed it. Do be aware that if you have a significant bacterial overgrowth that it can take a number of rounds of Rifaxmin to resolve it - and even then, the overgrowth can return. To avoid this, you need to identify the root cause which is complicated and can be anything from long-term poor bile flow to low stomach acid to past overuse of antibiotics etc.Do note that some of the herbal antimicrobials are very much as effective and in some cases may be more effective than Rifaxamin - as shown in double-blind studies. And Rifaxmin is often used alongside an antimicrobial like oregano oil or Allicin (garlic extract) which can be even more effective, again backed by double-blind studies.Something to also consider is that quite a few of the top gut specialists and functional medical doctors in the USA have moved to a new approach for gut issues where there is bacterial overgrowth. Where once they used a "kill approach" as is the case with antibiotics and antimicrobials, now some use prebiotics like PHGG and Inulin which promote the growth of good bacteria which in time "out-compete" the troublesome bacteria and over time, symptoms are resolved. I have personally been treated with this approach. If at all possible, get a SIBO breath test and a Candida test (OATS tests are best for this) before undergoing treatment. If Candida is the issue, Rifaximin will just make matters worse (as it kills bacteria which will allow Candida to thrive).I have been through the wringer of gut issues so if you have any issues, feel free to ask.
