Not if people are paid in dollars. Conversion matters.

And yet 1 baht is still 1 baht!

You are 20 years older. You are slower. Less fit. Less atttractive.

In fairness, I wasn't in Thailand 20 years ago, but the photos from back then show a lot less cottage cheeze on the chicks.

It affects every farang paid in dollars or pounds. So probably nearly all farangs except teachers.

Fair point. Obesity is up. Fat chicks were rare.

No adults weigh under 30kgs dude. The average small Isaan woman weighs 36 to 40kgs.

Ticks? They're getting worse all over the US as well. Being a hunter I have to keep a close eye when I'm moving a deer I've shot. Lyme disease is no joke and spreading. I didn't think about the ticks in Canada but seeing there is so many animals, I'm sure they're a problem during the ice out until freeze up.

Ya ticks. My old house was ground zero area in the province. I had to do full checks every time I came in from being out doing anything in my back acres.

Brutal little bastar*s.

Foreign firms pay in dollars. Pensioners get paid in home currency.

Anyone employed in Thailand no matter the parent company is paid in baht........ or they do not have a work permit and are working illegally.

Yep. Good thing when you have a partner so they can check your backside. The ones that cause the most problems are tiny. Useless insects.

I would argue that Thailand was far better 20 years ago, both for the Thai people and for tourists and expats, it was an infinitely richer experience, filled with a lot more culture, way better value, and better attitudes. I moved to Samui 20 years ago and the place was paradise, 10 years later it was as horrific as Bali.

Thailand has changed so much and it is not moving in the right direction, Thailand is an incredibly regressive nation, ruled by regressive dinosaur elites, who consider the welfare of the people to be their last priority in the world.

And with their pathological refusal to allow the youth some say in the matter, regardless of whether or not they win elections, it does not look like that's going to change anytime soon. Everything the government does here is wrong in regard to tourism, public safety, the environment, the economy, and visa policy.

One might ask how could the government intervene to improve Thailand at this stage of the game. A few suggestions.

1. Lowering luxury taxes to attract wealthy tourists who like to spend while in vacation and can get the identical item elsewhere for 60% less.

2. Lowering wine taxes for affluent tourists, who are used to consuming a bottle every night with dinner and may pay $100 for that bottle at home and are completely unwilling to pay $600 if they can even find that same bottle here.

3. Cleaning up the air and the waters. Respecting the environment.

4. Making the highways safer and beefing up the highway patrol so they actually pull over reckless drivers.

4. Allowing more private air travel, and helicopter travel making it far easier to move around.

5. Getting serious about high-speed trains and alternatives to the totally choked and extremely hazardous highways.

6. Dealing effectively with the taxi scammers.

7. Dealing with the many other scammers.

8. Getting serious about public safety and better monitoring of boats and ferries.

9. Figuring out a way to keep crime in Pattaya out of the news. Perhaps by bringing the crime committed against tourists under control.

10 Sidewalks.  Have you been to Chiang Mai?  They put four-foot electrical boxes in the middle of the sidewalks. I've also seen this in Pattaya. You can't walk 50 m anywhere in Thailand without risking injuries to your feet or your body.

11. Crosswalk safety.  Drivers do not respect the zebra crossings.  They will run you over.

12. Consistent Visa policy.

I could go on and on but you get the point. And shorter lines at immigration when the airports are very busy which would be such an easy thing to accomplish.

How so? The average wage was less 20 years ago. Plane tickets have come down in price. I pay less now than 20 years ago. Food prices have risen 20 baht which adjusted for inflation is no different.

17 years back my return ticket from the UK was 220 pounds.

And ST was available everywhere for 500bht.

But the only TV was True satellite, and Brit food was expensive.
