Enter Thailand on the 3rd visa-exempt entry per calendar year

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I’m planning to come back to Thailand for a few weeks next month on VE,

and might go down to Malaysia for a week before coming back to Thailand

for another few weeks on VE again.

I’ve learned that you’ve been allowed to enter Thailand on VE not more than

twice per calendar year since November 2025, but would it be hard or even

impossible to re-enter Thailand on the 3rd VE later this year? I’ll spend a few

weeks at most on every visit to Thailand.

Thank you in advance!

You won't have a problem, as your visits are short. There's no hard limit on the number of visa exempt entries, immigration is more interested in your overall time spent in Thailand.

Thank you for your comments!

How about staying in Thailand for about 1 or 2 months

per visit without doing any extentions?

Depending on the number of those visits, the time spent out of the country between them and the IO you encounter, that may stretch what they consider acceptable.

As a rule of thumb, you should be okay if you spend more time outside of Thailand in between visits than in Thailand. In your opening post, you mentioned going to Malaysia for a week before returning to Thailand though. That could be seen as a border run if your stays in Thailand are long.

Thank you very much for your comment indeed!

The reason I asked you this question was just because some said that you're

allowed to enter Thailand on VE only twice per calendar but others said that

you can do that more than twice unless you stay in the Kingdom for long on

each visit. Which was confusing to me so I needed to seek for clarification.

For me, I'm currently staying in Vietnam and planning to come back to

Thailand to see my local friends for a few weeks for Songkran next month.

I'll then probably go down to Penang, Malaysia for a week (I do love Penang)

before coming back to the Kingdom by land to see some other local friends

of mine (I've got so many local friends in BKK, Isaan, Chiang Rai, Chonburi,

Chumphon and Phuket, etc. after having lived in Thailand for a decade on

Non-B visa. Not only can I speak Thai but write to them in Thai.) So I might

spend a month or so on my 2nd entry (VE) because 2 weeks might not be

long enough, and that does make me wonder if I can come back to Thailand

on the 3rd entry (VE) later this year. I'm not going to make a 30-day extension

to try to stay in the Kingdom as long as possible, though.

Thank you again for your comments! You do sound nice and friendly, and

very helpful! You've been a member since ubonjoe took good care of this

forum, haven't you? So have I! Oh, I do miss him..

As your 1st stay (before your trip to Malaysia) will be short and as your 3rd stay will happen much later (after a long time out of Thailand), I think you will be fine. If you had planned to repeat a "1-2 months in Thailand, 1 week out" pattern, on the other hand, that would be short-lived nowadays. There's definitely no hard "2 visa exempt entries per year" limit, many people have reported coming in far more often than that - for short stays.

Yes, I've been here for a while and remember ubonjoe well. He really was a fountain of wisdom and is still fondly remembered by many long-term members, including myself.

Alright, one of my possible itineraries would be to enter Thailand for 2 weeks,

go to Malaysia for a week, come back to Thailand for another 2 weeks, and

would it be possible to come back to Thailand after staying in Vietnam for 1

month or so. (I can get a 45-day stay in Vietnam on VE.) On my 3rd VE entry

maybe I'd stay in the Kingdown longer by making a 30-day extention and

then I'd never come back to Thailand again this year. Would that kind of

extension be possible in this case? I wouldn't mind it if not possible,

though.

Thank you again for your time!

Yes, ubonjoe was such a great man!

I was just in Udon Thani immigration. I overheard them tell another customer to enter by air since he already had two previous Entries.

Get a visa, Thailand not interested in tight wad Cheap Charlie's

It's no longer based on per calendar year, Immigration will look at your previous history regardless of the year.

If your maxing out your time on VE entries, then you can only enter twice, 60 days + 30 day extension, 2nd entry 60 days + 7 day extension = 157 days.

For shorter stays, you can enter more than twice. Work on the basis of 150 days per year before being questioned or refused entry.

Im not sure that ur plan will work out positive. Its up to the IO to decide. IF the IO think ur a visa runner u will be denied entry. That u speak/write thai have nothing to do in ur case. What people say here isnt a 100% right answer..its just how things migth go in ur entries.I wish u good luck and hope the best for u but i want be surpriced if u get problems on ur entry.
