i guess Krungsri is good enough

The only thing with Krungsri is that, if you're aged 70+, they won't allow you to download and use their mobile banking app. Mind you, if you have an aversion to banking-by-app as I do, that could be a blessing in disguise!

It's quite common for banks nowadays to ask for a 2nd form of ID. Do you have a valid driving license from your home country or from Thailand? That would be worth a shot. Your visa as such should be f

Recently reports of the bank wanting proof of home address in passport country.

Acceptable eg would be foreign DL.

That's tough after living here for close to two decades without leaving. I have a yellow book, two Thai DLs, and a pink card. But I've been with my banks for close to two decades as well. Oh well, why worry, be happy.

The concern is for new expats that do not have a Thai bank account.

The days of entering visa exempt and using TM87 to obtain a Non O is no longer possible.

Enter Thailand with a Non immigrant visa and proceed from there.

With a Non O + some other docs eg COR opening a bank account should be possible.

The OP, and others in his position, would IMHO be best advised to concentrate their efforts on branches of the 2 banks with which they would hopefully experience the greatest chance of success in opening accounts - namely Krungsri (with which I see the OP has now experienced success!) and SCB.

I forgot to mention Krung Thai - so 3 banks actually.

I am waiting for an answer from KBank about the matter.

If it's not satisfactory I will try a fixed deposit at Krungsri and carry a bag of cash down the road.

I contacted KBank through the email option (no identification, account numbers etc.).

It took me about 10 captchas to get the message out.

Buses, fire hydrants, pedestrian crossings etc.

Silly.

Answer from Kbank is hardly worth a dime.

Just a long general list of requirements for account opening.

And the question about the purpose of that "additional document" is not answered.

No mention of an address.

I could take this for granted and order me a new ID card (without address) for 2xxx Baht and then go to Kbank.

And then?

Try and error?

This must be something new with Krungsri bank. I've used their app regularly, more so since they stopped the online service on their website last October, most recently on 05.05.2026, but when I tried to log in earlier today I got a pop-up telling me that my account is locked. Then I uninstalled the app, installed it again and started a new registration on the app. Result:

This seems to be a violation of Section 27 of the currently valid Constitution of Thailand:

Unjust discrimination against a person on the grounds of differences in origin, race, language, sex, age, disability, physical or health condition, personal status, economic and social standing, religious belief, education, or political view which is not contrary to the provisions of the Constitution or on any other grounds, shall not be permitted.

From AI:

Section 27 explicitly states that "all persons are equal before the law" and prohibits "unjust discrimination" based on origin, race, or economic standing. However, this right is not absolute:

  • The "Necessity" Clause: The state may impose restrictions deemed necessary for public order, national security, or the economic stability of the country.

  • Targeted Measures: Measures intended to eliminate obstacles or protect the public interest are not deemed unjust discrimination under paragraph four of Section 27.

While Section 27 protects against discrimination, the Thai legal system generally views banking as a regulated service rather than an inherent constitutional right for non-citizens.

  • Security Over Equality: Courts often uphold these restrictions if the state argues they are essential for Anti-Money Laundering (AML) compliance and protecting the national financial system from fraud.

  • Contractual Liberty: Banks, as private or semi-private entities, maintain the right to set their own risk management criteria, provided they do not violate specific anti-discrimination laws that target protected classes in a way the state deems "unjust".

Translation: Foreigners have been assessed a risk for the country, consequently they should be more closely monitored and their rights limited.

Nothing to do with foreigners. Krungsri's internal regulation to exclude the elderly from using their app also applies to Thai nationals.

Nice. So opened an account in vain to be closed next year.

Stupidos.

I used digital banking even before internet banking and they want to declare me senile!

Yes indeed. Noting that the screenshot clearly indicates "Age or nationality does not meet the criteria of the bank".

My comment also goes along with recent Bangkok Bank policy restricting foreigners accounts.

This whole issue was raised in this thread on the Banking forum:

Together with recent Kasikorn policy requiring proof of home country ID for foreigners wishing to open new accounts as well, presumably. Krungsri's policy limiting the use of their app to those aged between 12 and 70 may arguably be ageist, but it is most certainly not blatantly anti-foreigner discriminatory in the way that the aforementioned Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn policies clearly are.

I opened a Kasikorn account a couple of months ago. They asked for a home country ID in addition to my passport. They accepted my Thai drivers license. I didn't think anything of it.

Not blatantly but Krungsri is, just in case, prepared and ready to enforce foreigners discriminatory rules as the screenshot suggests.

What did you use for home country ID... DL?

I told them that I no longer had a US drivers license. They accepted the Thai license + my US passport.

On 3/20/2026 at 10:08 AM, BrandonJT said:

Why would the Thai DL be worth anything if they want additional identification? That Thai DL is based on the passport they already have. They want something else from your home country that shows who you are. Something independant.

Maybe a gym membership or library card would suffice 😁

Previously your pp was all that was required for "home address in pp country"

Seems now that something such as pp country DL or similar is required.

Some expats have not maintained DL for pp country

If you're from the UK then (Legally) you cannot renew your DL if you are not ordinarily resident (usually defined as spending >185 days per year in the UK).

I think there's some confusion over the additional proof of address requirement as although they ask for one in your home country, I was also able to use an additional proof of address in Thailand for my Bangkok Bank account & when opening a new Kasikorn account.

So maybe just before Kasikorn introduced their new requirement?

Seriously wondering whether SCB and KTB may now be your sole remaining banking hopes here in LOS? Ironically these banks were the first two to inflict the banking-by-app nonsense on their account holders!

Could be, I did go in on 9th March to move over the other 400K (I'm switching to using this account for my Retirement Extension after my experience with BBL) & they didn't ask me for any extra ID then.
