Regular Price Of Haircut For Tourist On Near Asoke

Hi,

Being a tourist I'm accustomed to pay the "tourist" rate for getting a haircut. I'm a guy who just has a french crop so nothing difficult. I'm usually charged around THB 300 or if I want it coloured it's THB 600. Is this the normal price if there is such a thing? If not can anyone recommend a place near Asoke and advise approx price.

It seems to me that a thai girl can be in a salon for hours and only pay the same price as me being in there for 30mins!!!

Thanks

Up here where I live in Pai, it used to be 20 baht but inflation caught up with us and it has recently gone up to 25 baht.

When I lived in Bangkok I was horrified to be slugged 100 baht, that was in a 'unisex' salon so maybe I paid extra to be looked after by a beautiful girl?

100 is pretty normal in any kind of central areas, although if you go to a barbers shop then you will pay about 50 baht. Try and find one that doesnt have a load of tourists in and expect to pay around 100 baht (if you do this you might get the wrong haircut if you cant speak thai).

The cost are about right - the unisex shop on Soi Aree I go to is 150. The barbershop in Sukhothai is 50. She's cute and the music is good, he's fat and soap operas are on the TV. My experince is the less I say the better. I've heard that communicating about hair cuts is one of the more difficult things to do in another language. Seems to be the case with me. One time I tried to describe the various levels of "short" I wanted in different places and would have been better to just say "can you shave my head". Now I just smile and see what happens.

It is a treat when you get a barber shop to do the whole shave, nose clipping - the works. Then it was fun last time when the girl was doing the blow dry to blow away all the loose hair and when she pulled back the collar of my shirt she saw all the hair on my back and had fun giggling and blow drying that. Every time and adventure :o

Can you give me advise on where I can get my hair cut?

How sad.

Frankly anywhere they cut hair you can get a hair cut and they are thousands of salons and barbers in Bangkok.

If you are really worried about a haircut and want to explain exactly what you want then I suggest staying close to Suk ex-pat areas and pay the 200-300 to have someone who cuts your hair who speaks English. Maybe a shop in a top western hotel chain would be safe.

If you want to have some adventure and take a little risk - becuase it will grow out - just walk into any salon or barber and tell them you want a haircut. Maybe just touch your head and say "nit noi" to tell them just a little. They know how to cut hair and really in my experince the main error is shorter than I'd have wanted but to be honest when this happens everyone tells me I look younger so who's to complain.

My advice: walk out of your apartment or hotel, look left, look right, find one that you like and walk in. If you like a guy place then a barber, if you want a salon (I think really all are unisex) the go to more of a salon.

That easy really!

Here's an idea: Go to Qi in Emporium and pay 600 baht for a really good cut. Go home and take a few photographs of your head. In one month's time (or 6 weeks if you're a barbarian) go to Sweeney Somchai, show him the pictures and pay 50 baht for something that will hopefully look similar.

Ten years I've been promising myself I'd do this

You can always use the facilities at the underground mall in the Sukhumvit MRT station on the corner of Sukhumvit/Asoke. They have these cute little Japanese stalls and charge 100 baht. Haven't tried it myself, but if your cut is simple, I can't imagine you'd have any issues.
