azrael,

i have just noticed bangsue has enclosed a map of the area in his/her reply.

if you cant read thai, i will try and explain as best i can.

the road at the top of the map is lad praw rd, the road coming down at 90 degress is soi 122.

the road on the bottom of the map is ramkamheng rd, the soi going up at 90 degrees is called soi maha thai.

whether you are coming from lad praw road or ramkamheng rd, you want to turn into either yaak ( intersection) 13 or 15, the apt block is located betwen these 2 small sois.

i dont know where you live, you could always get on the klong san saep boat and get off at mahad thai pier, which is located between ramkamheng university and wat khlang, then get a motorcycle taxi, not more than 5 minutes away.

good luck if you need any more help just ask.

Your right I cannot read Thai, I do have a question though, what are the names of the buildings on the map? I was told Ladprao 122 is some kind of party area, well i'm not sure but thanks for your help.

arael

all the buildings on the map are mansions, cheap rooms for rent, usually in the 3500-5000 baht per month price range, also available by the night for 350-400 baht. the one in the bottom left is a moo ga ta, basically a cook your own food buffet, eat as much as you want and cook on a steam boat placed on the table, you can either boil or grill chicken, pork, beef and squid etc, usually costs from 79 to 99 baht per person.

i have never heard of this area referred to as a party area, what do you mean by that? this area is a low cost housing area, usually populated by students who attend the universities on ramkhamheng rd and migrant workers from up country who work in bangkok.

i think someone is having a laugh with you, you wont find many farangs in this area, and there

please ignore my last reply, dont know what happened, got distracted half way through replying, and posted before i had finished.

anyway lets start again.

all the buildings are low cost mansions, apt buildings for rent, 3500-5000 baht per month, or 350-500 baht per night.

the building on the bottom left is a moo ga ta, a thai style self service buffet that you cook yourself, costs usually 79-99 baht per person.

this is a low cost housing area usually populated by students attending the nearby universities on ramkamheng rd, or migrants workers from upcountry who come to bangkok to work.

you wont find many westerners in this area, so there are no western style bars or clubs, there are however many thai style entertainment venues.

what are you looking for? cheap housing or a party area?

there are other party areas available elsewhere, but it really depends on your budget.

I whole heartedly appreaciate your information, I am looking for low cost housing I was asking about the party area thing because i'm looking for just the opposite. I need some place quiet, coming from Japan I'm not well versed or adjusted to Thailands style of nightlife. I'm just looking for a relatively safe place and the less active the better. Are there any areas to avoid in Bangkok though?

i will try and answer your questions.

first, areas to avoid, bangkok isnt like a normal city where certain areas are for the rich people with other areas for the middle class and other areas for the working class and poor people.

bangkok is like a collection of small villages joined together to form the city, there are areas within areas, it is not uncommon to see a shack round the corner from a mansion, so sorry i cant help you with specific areas.

i think you would need to decide which district you want to live in and then choose a sub district within the

district.

the next problem you have is you dont read or speak thai.

if i were you i would live in this district as it is near to the university, this will give you time to get to know your way round the area.

yes you could live elsewhere, but you dont know the transport system, or how to ask for directions, not all thais in the area speak english or japanese.

i know there are many japanese students in the area who attend abac, i think they are doing mbas, many of these students are also attending english language schools as well as studying at a thai language school.

i am sure you will meet people from your own country who can help you better than i can, and answer your questions in better detail, eg, where to eat japanese food, where to buy japanese products etc.

before choosing an apartment to stay in, a few things to consider, get a room on as high a floor as you can, this will help reduce the noise from the street, make sure there are know clubs or karaoke bars near by, try and avoid a location next to a busy road etc etc.

something else you may want to consider, most places will want 3 months rent up front, be careful about what you are signing, also be aware of the costs for water and electricity, some of these apartments look cheap on paper, but you get screwed by what you are charged for water and electricity, always ask what is the cost per unit, the costs in the apartment you asked about are expensive per unit and not uncommon

this area isnt known as a party area, students too busy studying and poor people to busy working, again be careful about which apartment you choose to live in, its not uncommon to have 4 generations of one family living in a 18 square meter apartment, they also are not suppossed to have dogs in these apartments, but some people do keep them.

good luck with your studies, if you have any more questions, just ask.

I do thank you my friend, I had no idea bangkok is built this way, sounds just as disorganized and unplanned as Tokyo. I think I will stick with PR Park it looks relatively quiet and hidden, also that little restaurant and 7 eleven are near by. I have been to Thailand several times before but never Bangkok, coming from one conjested city to another is not my cup of tea while travelling around asia. But atleast the people are more humble and friendly but I dont like some of thier bussiness practices reminds me of Japan :o

I think you may be right someone may have been trying to get a laugh out of me, This American fellow told me that Ladprao soi 122 is a known party area for students. If it is it must be the roaches I guess LOL!

Quick question I wonder how far this apartment is from Fbt sport complex? I know that map isnt particular in the way of detail I think its across the canal right?

to answer your last question, depends really on how long your legs are and how fast you walk, its no more than a 10 minute walk, something most thais wouldnt even consider. you will be able to get on the back of a motorcycle taxi from your apt to the fbt building for about 10-15 baht.

in my opinion tokyo is organised chaos, bangkok is just madness.

you will find many places to eat in this area, from thai style sit down eating to roadside vendors selling all sorts, and very reasonable prices, depending on where and what you eat you can eat your fill for 100-150 baht.

when are you due in bangkok?
