I see the Miss England contest is on again.

Featured is Miss Surrey, Chloe Marshall. :D

That is an absolute joke and PCness gone nuts. Not only is she huge but she is dog ugly with it.

Here are the girls who she was up against in her regional finals. http://www.missengland.info/regionals-surrey.html

Look at Jenny Velasquez (at the bottom) what a beauty or Jessica Edwards (mid way down) and then tell me this Chloe Marshall deserved to win it. :o

Er, dog-ugly is a bit strong! However, I agree she was not the best looking (is that still the criteria?) My fav was 06. Aletha Shepherd - Georgeous!

I forgot to buy buttermilk when I was at the supermarket. Next time then. (For the Irish soda bread, and perhaps some American style buttermilk pancakes to boot.)

You make Irish soda bread? My favourite. I have it every day for breakfast.

You mentioned it the other day (on this thread, I think) and were singing its praises. So I looked up a recipe and noted that it required buttermilk. The next loaf I make will be my first - I'd not heard of it before.

Forgetful? Your memory's the second thing to go, I can't remember the first!

Best of luck with it. I tried to bake it many times but it just didn't turn out like my dear old mums version. It's quite a chunky bread, quite heavy, not at all like bread made with yeast. It should feel like you're having something healthy especially if it's the brown bread - that's what I have. Shop bought, but made by an Irish chef.

Well I've had a go at making various breads quite a few times - with very limited success (if you compare them with commercial products). But I still enjoy the ones I've made, so I assume that the same will happen with this effort...

I don't know that it would be available commercially here - although we've got a decent sized Irish expat community here, and many descendants of Irish immigrants. It would probably be a matter of hunting around... I'll stick with baking one myself.

When you do it, try a very flat (maybe 2", 5cm) one cooked til crispy on the outside. Keeps almost indefinitely. I used to make them to take on survival trips into the mountains. The amount of goodness in one when had with a 'home-made' soup in the mountains was unbelievable! Survival trips lasted up to 2 weeks and it tasted as good on the first day as the last!

Sounds like I may have to sharpen my teeth! My survival trips are currently confined to my regular visits to Bedlam... :o

Hey, it's the most exciting thing I do these days! :o

I've got a survival tip.

When away from home, only stay in a minimum of a 3 star hotel.

But survival exercises? Were you in the Reserves (or was it a missionary position)?

Awe phoooey....!

An absolute minimum I would have thought!

Special services.

^ Wasn't that a brand of cigarettes? :o

I think so! Or was that Senior service? Up there with Woodbines and Players, oh, and Sweet Afton. My Dad used to smoke them!

Peter Stuyvesant....! :o

I always thought Rothmans sounded posh. Does anyone remember the Airline pilot smoking them in the cockpit? :o

Yep, Senior Service - gone. Are Camels still around? Remember the cutouts, etc that they would place around the streets in some cities? I think Woodbines and Players are gone (certainly from here). Went the way of Viscount, Craven A, Temple Bar, 555, Turf, Belvedere... gawd - so many others I've forgotten.

I used to love un-tipped Camels, a very strong smoke, don't know if you can still get them.

Now in contrast to that I'm off to the gym for my daily 'kill myself' session!

Camels need their 10% the same as everyone else..........shame on parsimonious kitties

Paying for pain. There's a word for that... :o

The old line, of course, is that Camels were the only brand of cigarette that displayed the factory on the front of the packet.

Rubber duck....
