Words, Like Tears In Rain...

Il Pleure Dans Mon Coeur

by Paul VERLAINE

Il pleure dans mon coeur

Comme il pleut sur la ville ;

Quelle est cette langueur

Qui pénètre mon coeur ?

Ô bruit doux de la pluie

Par terre et sur les toits !

Pour un coeur qui s'ennuie,

Ô le chant de la pluie !

Il pleure sans raison

Dans ce coeur qui s'écoeure.

Quoi ! nulle trahison ?...

Ce deuil est sans raison.

C'est bien la pire peine

De ne savoir pourquoi

Sans amour et sans haine

Mon coeur a tant de peine !

Mon coeur a tant de peine !

It's raining in my Heart

Like it is Raining over the town;

What is this languishing,

That penetrates my heart ?

Oh! Soft noise of the rain

On the ground and on the rooftops;

For a heart that is bored,

Oh! The song of the Rain !

It cries without reason,

In this Nauseated Heart;.

What? Lousy Betrayal?...

This grief is without reason.

It is surely the worst sadness

To not know why;

Without Love and without Hate

My heart is so full or sorrow!

A traditional ode to the humble baked bean.

Oh bean, bean thou ist so good for mine heart.

The more thy consumeth the more one doth fart.

hmmm, maybe your beans need a little onion:

Ode To The Onion

Pablo Neruda

Onion,

luminous flask,

your beauty formed

petal by petal,

crystal scales expanded you

and in the secrecy of the dark earth

your belly grew round with dew.

Under the earth

the miracle

happened

and when your clumsy

green stem appeared,

and your leaves were born

like swords

in the garden,

the earth heaped up her power

showing your naked transparency,

and as the remote sea

in lifting the breasts of Aphrodite

duplicating the magnolia,

so did the earth

make you,

onion

clear as a planet

and destined

to shine,

constant constellation,

round rose of water,

upon

the table

of the poor.

You make us cry without hurting us.

I have praised everything that exists,

but to me, onion, you are

more beautiful than a bird

of dazzling feathers,

heavenly globe, platinum goblet,

unmoving dance

of the snowy anemone

and the fragrance of the earth lives

in your crystalline nature.

Kat, you've brought tears to my eyes and hopefully hopefully brought about the banishment of all things bean, be they french, green, baked or broad.... :o

Great poems guys, keep 'em coming I loving reading them. I will add something soon as I think of something worth adding.

Contagion

Elephants are contagious!

Be careful how you tread.

An Elephant that's been trodden on

Should be confined to bed!

Leopards are contagious too.

Be careful tiny tots.

They don't give you a temperature

But lots and lots - of spots.

The Herring is a lucky fish

From all disease inured.

Should he be ill when caught at sea;

Immediately - he's cured!

Kayo,

I chose this poem specifically because it (in my opinion) exactly expresses the sentiment of the title of this thread, "Words, Like Tears in Rain". I think that your translation is innacurate; I would not correct it except for the fact that the correct translation will, I feel, show greater resonance with the thread title and more depth of emotion. The title should be "There is weeping in my heart"....or similar.

The first two lines should be translated as "There is weeping in my heart like there is rain falling on the town"....or something similar. I favor "Tears fall in my heart like the rain falling on the village"....but it this would probably be considered too free for most francophones.

Chownah

Hi, Chownah,

I enjoyed trying to translate it. I used to do French lit at one my high schools (as a teenager in France) but had never heard of this poem before.

Granted my translation isn't perfect, and my french is admittedly rusty, at best.

The meaning, or rather the emotion behind it, did indeed resonate strongly, asnd is perhaps the most expressive post on this thread so far of the sentiment of my O.P (- the O.P, which also I did not express to the best of my abilities)

Beautiful, Chownah. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Thanks for the beautiful poem, Chownah, and the translation Kayo. Verlaine reminds me of Pablo Neruda.

And LeungKen, I'm glad they were tears with no pain.
