I'm from canada and am planning to set my roots at bkk for about a year. Because I have a internet business, and much of it operates at a "real time data stream" from New York & Toronto (EST), which is 9pm to 4am in Bangkok (ICT). Does anyone have any idea of which spot is best suited for:

1)receiving international data

2)quickest speed and lowest internet traffic during 9pm - 4am (ICT)

Note: quick speed meaning at least d/l 1mbs

Cheers

I was suggested in finding a place in Silom or Sukhumvit, just because it's the most urbane area with hopes that the technology is most up-to-date. My only worry is the dense population at peak hour.

Would that be something I need to worry about? Thx. :o

Forget about it, unless you buy a dedicated line. Movie streaming (and I guess all streaming data) is worthless in Thailand. Sites like Youtube can only be used satisfactory after 3:00 am and then the streaming speed is not faster than 600-700 kbs.

:o Understood. So is there actually a specific "best place to be" within Bangkok if you can't afford a dedicated line but want the best possible connection that Thailand has to offer ?

I'm looking at setting up a server in Suan Luang. I don't need speed so much as I need reliability. My DSL connection in Chachoengsao grinds to a halt during peak hours, hence I'm looking into whether I can better this situation with a connection in Bangkok.

Don't know what is the best location in Bangkok. What i do know is that zipcode '10400' (that's Petchburi/Asoke, where I live) is supposed to be a good area both for True and TOT.

I have heard that up near Laksi (quite near Don Muang airport) is supposedly the best location, because you're near the CAT head office. (i.e. less routers physically between you and CAT's international links)

Whether that's actually true or not - I don't know. All home (and SME?) internet connections will remain crap until at least the end of the year when the new fibre links to the US are hooked up. (and that still probably won't be enough).

Icky01, there was this recent thread on the subject.

If your livelihood depends on a fast and reliable Internet connection, Thailand may not be the right place for you. I believe some Internet service providers offer subscriptions with 4 MB download but whether you will get an actual speed of 1 MB during the night hours you mentioned I cannot say. Let’s hear it from those who have a subscription to such a fast speed.

Thx all.. for the great advice..

Well, I'll still plan to travel to Thailand and maybe try the different locations as suggested; find out if there's any truism to whether locations do make a difference to internet speed and to what variance.

So far I've email True and am waiting for their reply. Figure if anyone has a clue to what and where works best, it should be them.

If you guys know of a better way.. I'll appreciate it.

I'll be sure to keep u posted. :o

Is it viable to co-locate a proxy server in Bangkok and rely on domestic bandwidth to your PC? Personally my needs are less real-time, but would that be a viable route for the OP?

Not sure what you mean by "co-locate a proxy server".. Do you mean setting something like "gotomypc" where you can remotely access your computer from any other Internet-connected computer in the world.. That was something i was considering - but don't think it would make much of a difference to the speed of the bandwidth..

But I'm sure that's not what you mean.. care to explain

I have received word from True; but I suspect they have a policy in answering a question candidly.. What they have share with me is the following:

We have our data center at 2 sites as following:

1. True Tower (HQ): on Ratchadapisek road, Bangkok. There are only 2-3 rack available now.

2. Muang Thong Thani: This site is our new data center which is located in Nonthaburi Province. It's far from our HQ about 20 km.

What is 2-3 rack?

Do any of you noticed that the following area have much better reliability?

Thanks. :o

What about Pattaya, where if there is any Pattaya Techies on here, would you say is best in pattaya?

I live near top of Soi Khao Noi, and this year meaning late 2007 net is terrible I supposed to have over 2500 download, I seen it over 300 alot, and thats Premier Maxnet TTT at 4000 B a month.

anyway after long of calls and TTT lads out here, they told me cause where I live is at the "end of the cable" my net will be bad, about 2km or more in from Sukhumvit highway. so I noticed net slows 4pm - 11pm most days, all the pesky kids in net cafes download crap.

So I am moving down a nearby soi to an office a few 100 m from main road and near a CAT "transformer" is the best word I can think of and getting a static IP address too. So fingers crossed.

Other than that I think if your biz working Virtual into euro was making enough money a T1 leased line would be the answer.

HA HA I asked Maxnet TTT technie about T1 leased line, he never hear of it, and then gormless said Maxnet do not do them...very strange I though as I enquired in October about the price & sales rep called me about 50 times from Maxnet...??!???!

Before you decide on anything, you might want to run some tests at Bug & Bee Cafe on Silom (near BTS); They have a high-speed TRUE connection (Free Wi-Fi and a few PC's provided). They are open 24 hours.

The 2-3 rack comment probably refers to equipment racks available for customer provided servers (??) I suspect this is not your situation.

I rented a home in Pattaya just off 3rd road (opp xzyte) and called TOT to install ADSL (there was already a phone line). The short story is after 4 months (paying bills throughout) I never received a whole day of ADSL. I had several visits each time they claimed a new and creative problem.

I trade futures online so after 4 months I just quit the house and rented a new one.

In my new home (further up Sukhumvit just passed BPH) I have requested ADSL 2 months ago. I still have no ADSL! I visit the office, I telephone nearly everyday. Now they are saying there is a "big wiring problem", I now hold out little hope and will have to move again! TT&T are not in the area, and True can only take over the line if and when TOT sort out their side.

I did post this info in another thread asking for any advice to deal with TOT. They just look at me blankly when I enter the office and tell me "oh yes someone will come out to you"..... very frustrating, and very very expensive! Anyone got any ideas???

Agree- they probably misunderstood your query about location, and answered about co-location IE putting your server on the high speed backbone in their data center.

The OP sounds like he might be wanting to do online trading in Thailand. My advice is stay in Canada and come to Thailand for holidays. Or move to Hong Kong.

If you insist on coming to Thailand you want to find out where the telephone exchanges are and rent a place right next to one.

Forget Pattaya if reliable internet connection is a must.

You hit the nail on the head..

Yes, that's exactly what I do... Trading the market gives you the luxury of working from around the world; at least a world where there's reliable internet..

Finding a place in Bangkok, near the "telephone exchanges", is exactly what I'm trying to do..

I'm thinking of setting up in Thailand doing my current job, I need to make good quality phonecalls to the UK between 15.00 & 21.00 Monday to Friday. Is there anywhere in Thailand that has quick enough internet connections to do this using skype?? 512k upload speeds.

(sorry to tag this on the bottom of your thread)
