Crash Kills Three From Family, Young Daughter Sole Survivor
Picture from responders. A devastating car crash on a highway in Chumphon has claimed the lives of a married couple and their three-year-old son, leaving only their eight-year-old daughter as the sole survivor. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 12:20 on 2 February, on Asia Highway 41 in Wisai Tai, Sawi district. Police and emergency rescue teams from Chumphon Foundation and Wisai Nuea Rescue Unit rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a vehicle plunging off the roadside. The crash took place on the Bangkok-bound lane near Khuan Khanun Hill. A white Honda CR-V with Bangkok registration had veered off the road and tumbled down a five-metre embankment before landing on its roof. The car was completely wrecked, with personal belongings and debris scattered across the area. Rescuers recovered the bodies of three victims from the vehicle: • Mr Chanthanong 46, a hospital IT officer • Ms Nareerath 45, a pharmacist at the same hospital • Master Kalawela their three-year-old son Miraculously, their eight-year-old daughter, Miss Taratara, survived with injuries to her foot. She was taken to Sawi Hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition. The bodies of the deceased were also transported to the hospital for further examinations. Mr Nop 81, a resident near the crash site, described the moment he witnessed the crash. “I saw the car driver lose control, spinning, before hitting a palm tree in front of my house. It was shocking. When I ran over, I heard a little girl crying, so I helped her out. The others in the car were silent,” he recalled. Initial investigations suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, with skid marks indicating an attempt to correct course before the car veered off the road. Police Search Khao San Road Bars in Drug-Free Campaign
Picture courtesy: Daily News In a concerted effort to maintain a 'drug-free' environment in nightlife venues, Bangkok police conducted searches on several bars along Khao San Road on 2nd February. The operation was part of a government directive aimed at preventing drug-related activities in entertainment districts. Led by Police Colonel Ekkapop Tanprayoon, deputy commander of the Metropolitan Police Division 1, the operation involved officers from Chanasongkram Police Station, tourist police, and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, alongside the Office of the Narcotics Control Board. The collaborative force aimed to prevent crime and suppress drug-related activities in the popular area. Four establishments were targeted in the inspections: The Club, ReRe Khao San, Khao San Centre, and Lucky Beer. Officers checked patrons to ensure all were over the legal age of 20, and conducted searches for weapons and illegal substances both inside the venues and in the adjacent car parks. A total of 39 individuals were subjected to random urine tests, all of which came back negative for drugs. Police Colonel Sanong Saengmanee from Chanasongkram Police Station stressed the importance of strict adherence to regulations by venue managers. Road Safety in Thailand – a summary of Perceptions and Reality
From my anecdotal evidence, corroborated by many TV threads, farang in Thailand are disastrous drivers. First, they drive on the wrong side of the road (if they are Americans or Europeans). Second, most don't have a license, ie they don't have the license to drive the kind of vehicle they drive here. People who have never in their life operated a motorcycle do it here all of the time. In their home country, they wouldn't dare to do it without the proper license. Here, I have been asked whether one needs a license at all to drive. And they can't read Thai traffic signs. Then, farang in Thailand are usually old, slow, poor vision, sleepy reflexes, but stubborn. Many wouldn't be considered roadworthy in their home-country. And they are usually drunk. Finally, most farangs know that they are superior beings. They cannot even imagine that their driving is less than perfect. And they are always quick to blame "the Thais". From this not-so-scientific analysis clearly follows, aliens should be relegated to walking. -
