World Photo Competition

Looking through them, I was both fascinated and a little shocked.

What is your views and I wonder if you come to the same conclusion as me.

Utter cr4p (they should be in the cr4p thread). Garbage

A couple of the sports section where ok but if that is the best photography this world has to offer, i think it's about time we went back to the box with the pin hole.

Crikey, you must have looked at the parts I didn't, I didn't see any sports photos, which now makes the object of my post obsolete.

Whilst scanning through them, all I saw was blown up Americans, Rockets from Gaza, Machetes from all over Africa, Bombs in India etc etc.

I had the impression that the only photos winning competitions were dark, horrible, foul and sombre, just waiting for Armageddon's painful arrival, however I guess I should have looked through the whole Archive.

I thought the ones I looked through were pretty evocative, thought invoking and on the spot photo-journalism, they neither have the time to get the picture aesthetically correct, nor would they want to, the pictures have more vibe and reality in them than a stage managed Hollywood production, what can be more hard hitting than seeing an exhausted G.I leant against a wall, thoroughly spent, it conjures up a nightmare of what on Earth had he just encountered, or more importantly, what he had encountered for months beforehand, possibly.

Alternatively, a shaken and completely out of focus picture of Bhutto's fateful bomb blast, that elicits thoughts of wild terror, madness, sectarian single mindedness and a myriad of other desperate measures.

I guess I need to revisit the site.

Ab fab Moss. Most of them were brill. No accounting for taste eh? Thanks for the link.

Not really impressive how about some nice scenes of peace and serenity.

No doubt Kan Win kan do better, but here's one of Ullswater in the Lake District taken just before Christmas to chill you out.

Edit: I should have reduced the size, so sorry if you got a slow download... makes a nice desktop tho' :o

How about something from the other side of the world...

Wow! beautiful colours. Samui sunset :o thanks.

Near Ban Rak 2 km from where I have my house. It's one of my favourite spots to have a beer at sunset.

A mixed bag of quality, I thought... but an interesting-enough link. Then again, my opinion's not worth a knob of nanny goat's in things artistic... I look at most paintings by Pablo Picasso and reckon they are 24 carat <deleted>. So, call me a philistine, but... really!

Are you really called Phil

Shouldn't this gag be in the crap thread! :o

Ping, you're a philistine!

:o

...but that's the second-oldest gag in the book (and they can't find the page with the oldest gag).

I fell off my dinosaur laughing at that one!

555 well I'm pleased you fell off, because the dinosaur then moved his foot off the primordial slime (I was the little green dot, BTW). That, Suegha, leaves you with TLW which will have to somehow place you at the big bang. Umm, on second thoughts... not a good idea!

E:T

I think the title of the thread is a little misleading.

The competition is the Annual Press Photo Competition. Hence the emphasis on war, explosions, blood and guts, etc, and the absence of portraits, sunsets and so on.
