Hello, do they have a GPS system that can be put in to a vehicle in thailand and how accurate are they?

Another question I am thinking of a new CRV and am woundering about the crash testing done on them verse other vehicles in the same class,,,,

How safe are they?

thanks in advance

You might have more success with this question in the Motoring Forum of ThaiVisa.

Perhaps a MOD can shift this topic for you.

Accuracy of GPS is the same everywhere, so very good.. Within a couple of meters.

THe thing that differs is the quality of the map.. While this is improving, it's still not as good as other places in the world. So quite a few mistakes with navigation, though it is usually good enough to eventually get there, which is usually what matters most.

Prices of GPSs are fast falling... Some mobile phones now have GPS, or GPS can be added cheaply.

I bought a Mio C520 a couple of months ago, for 16,000 thb. I'm pretty happy with it. You don't have much choice in brands here... It's pretty much only Garmin, or Mio, and you can't find them as easily as in Europe. I bought mine at Emporium in Bangkok.

This q from a newbie to GPS: How or where do you get the proper digital map of Thailand to input into your GPS unit? I ask because I would probably bring a unit from Canada.

i have a Garmin Nuvi 300 in one car and a Kenwood module attached to an ICE system in the other.

both are great, the biggest problem i have in use, is the spelling of Thai place names.

you need to input exactly the same spelling that is programmed into the units, this is not neccesarily the Thai spelling you may be used to seeing.

if its a long trip i tend to get the co-ordinates from Google earth and input them manually into the units.

that avoids any errors and circumvents the spelling issue.

the best thing however on both is the 'get me home' feature

when you are completely lost just enter GO HOME and it will map the route for you to the front door.

this is great when you are in Bangkok and have no real idea where you are.

In Bangkok 2 weeks ago using the Garmin Nuvi 200 it went AWOL.

Turn left 100 metres.

I did. It really wanted me to turn right!!!

Recalculating.....

This went on for about 10 minutes and heaven knows how many kilometres diversion it took to get me back on track and that only after turning off the machine and re-starting.

Same thing happened this week in Nakhonsawan while driving round a housing estate.

On the whole, they are very good, I would not be without mine, especially in BKK.

As I have been searching for a house to rent by driving round the housing estates, it has been invaluable when I have no idea what Soi I am on and I simply 'save' my location when finding a possible house. Then I can go back to it with little or no problem.
