Whats In A (capital) Name...?

Featured Replies

Just an observation but, we all know names are meant to start with capital's and, The Dan Sai Kid is a perfect example, (not just of a name) :D :D .

Why do loads and loads of us choose not to use them for our nic's, I never have yet, I tell people off for not scribin proper like....? :o

Is there anything behind it, or do you just think it looks cooler?

Oi, LeatherHead....!

This is going to make me sound dull! But I didn't realise it was an option when I first registered and being a newbie didn't know if it was possible to change it. However, I do think it looks cool! :o Now I like it...

So why red with an 'r' and not an 'R'?

I don't know! Its weird, I spell Russell but, I spell Rus, not Russ...! I think my nic looks better no capitals, just an odd bod like 50% of the others on TV.... :D

E-mail addresses don't allow capitals for your name if contained within. I think we've been trained to use the lower case because of that.

Hey, oh <deleted> me, thats it, thread over.

So does that mean all the ones with Capitals wears different make up then like, wired up different...?

redrus

No, they were probably just more aware of the option to choose a capital!

ps Also, when we were just lurking we were not to tuned in to peoples names on the board.

Personally it frustrates me when people construct type names and emails fully using lower case. Much in the same I don't like txt (sms) typing in emails. But lannarebirth's explanation pretty much covers it for me. All I can add to it is that at the time I signed up to this site I probably also used lower case out of laziness.

These days we tend to have a lot of usernames and passwords, many of which only get used once as we may never use that particuar site again. I didn't know whether the TV site would be a stayer in my internet regime or not so I just typed the first thing that came to mind. Luckily, as this particular username has stuck with me, I can live with chiliwasabi (apart from the fact that I misspelled chilli!) - I have definitely picked worse ones in the spur of the moment.

I've got a big P

No Patsycat, you can have a big 'P' if you want one! :o

I've got a big P and a capital H in my nick which is my own name so I guess it doesn't count as a nick. Same with my e mail address. I guess I could have used "pH" which could be viewed as a measure of my acidity but, apart from the odd caustic comment, I am a fairly neutral character.

I thought much of it comes from a bit of laziness same as the modern trend to omit capitals, punctuation and correct spellings from e mails. But then I think back to my apprentice days in the late '60's when one of my pals used to write his first and family names all in lower case because it looked cool.

Yeah, I'd often wondered that. The email theory might well be it but, in my case, I reckon I probably just looked at the other niks and thought "Ah, people don't use capitals". I really can't remember other than a vague feeling that capitals looked a little "formal". Also, due to the nature of my nik, I didn't really want to use capitals as then it would read MickSterbs and I didn't know if people would "get-it" if I actually split the words up like that. I should imagine that some dont get-it anyway... :o

I think more than anything else I like the informality of using lower case.

For me it was about logging on quicker. Typing MrBoJangles and having to hold caps lock down while i do the MBJ bit takes too long.

I'm all about speed.............ask Mrs BoJ :o

Well you must be cos I saw you in the non Capital section....!

redrus

Let's have capital and non-capital sections. That way most people would be in one camp or the other. We could refer to them as caps and non-caps. And say disparaging things about each other!

Or let's make it obscure and refer to either 'north' or 'south' of the river. So caps are north and non-caps are south.

I prefer the term 'special' :D

Yes, yes, all interesting theories and suggestions. It all smacks of an inferiority complex by the small letter people, who, adopting typical small letter people tactics, are now trying to suggest that the properly titled people have something wrong with them.

(Ping has baited his hook, cast his line and spread the burley. He is now waiting patiently for bites. :o)

No no no Ping, its like the old saying you know the one, about those with big cars....! :D

nOT BITING, pING, JUST BORED.....lol

I reckon it is just iggerance of properly using English grammar.

Lotsa people and businesses actually register names using lowercase spelled names, personal preference.

Here, just carelessness in most cases. (That will get bites.).

Simple people, simple problem, simply, lazeeeeeness.

E-mail addys are quite ok whether in HIGH case lowcase...... or MiXeDcAsE.

Addresses for any sites will work as above.

Passwords are usually 'case sensitive' for obvious reasons.

iggerance

Thats what I was searching for....! :o

redrus

Handwriting experts do suggest that people who use minuscules rather than capitals have lower self-esteem. Maybe a load of <deleted> but that's what a book I read on the subject said, at least.

In my case it was email usage that did it. The underscore in my name was necessary unless I wanted to be meadishsweetball which is a bit too long to be read comfortably. Now that my 'surname' gets truncated I wouldn't mind switching to just 'meadish' actually.
