I use mainly the TotalCommander 7.x.

By pressing Alt + F7 you get an Search Menu with many Options.

You can download the Program and use for free as long as you want but have t accept 1 Nag Screen.

Cheers.

I think you're confusing Copernic with something else, their slogan is even "The Search Engine for Your PC".

Maybe we not talking about the same program:

Yahoo also has a desktop search. I used Google mainly because it's very simple. Hit ctrl 2 times to get a nice central popup text field where you can directly enter your search term. No matter which app you are currently in. It's blazingly fast too.

It's kind of dumb though - last I used it it didn't, for example, prioritize applications. So I would get "Uninstall Application X" as first hit for "Application X". Ooops. It also freaked out occasionally and had to be restarted.

Oh, another cool feature of Google desktop search is that it keeps a certain amount of history, almost like a change history for files. And it can be paused.

Compared to Spotlight on OS X it was pretty far behind. On OS X I can use Spotlight without thinking and I use it for both launching apps and searching. Google desktop never was that good, so I would end up using it only for search. E.g. rarely.

Never used copernic but that crazy toolbar is a major turn-off :o I want a single line of text entry for search, not a window with a hundred buttons.

Copernic Desktop Search is free (for home use), and for me, it is the best search tool for your PC. Very customisable, very fast, very good UI. Copernic do web search tools too, but this is specifically for your desktop. Indexes emails in Outlook and Outlook Express too.
