What's most important to us is reasonable bungalow accomodation near a nice clean beach with some bars/restaurants in easy walking distance as we don't plan on hiring mopeds. We don't want to be somewhere very remote or slap bang in the middle of a strip. I don't care if the bars nearby are girlie bars or not.

I recently upgraded my phone and O2 unblocked my old one so any SIM card will work in it. It works in Asia too. I want to make receive calls to/from Ireland mainly. Also making some local calls for reservations/tips etc.

OK, this is first post so all, be kind. I have been to Samui many times, 3 times last year.

It sounds like to me you need to be in Bophut. The beach is OK and it's also fairly quiet, however Cheong Mon is my favorite beach.

Bophut, around fishermans village, is girly bar free and welcoming. Get yourself a place around there.

Be in no doubt that you will need transport on the island. A small suzuki jeep is safest but if your on a budget get a scooter but please wear a helmet the roads and other drivers are terrible.

Samui is a great place, take time to check out the restaurants near the pier in Maenam and the little place on the left just before the big 'fisherman village' road sign. It's cheap!

Hi guys,

Haven't booked any more accomodation or transport. Just wondering do you guys have international SIM cards in your mobile. I'm with O2 but it's really expensive to make or receive calls. Don't want to spend too much time on the phone but if I could get a cheap SIM card that gave good rates I would be interested if anyone has tips?

I plan on booking Lamai accomodation soon for the first few nights. haven't been online much to research places.

No we all have thai sim cards - easy to buy in country and then just buy top off cards as you need it. Much cheaper to dial out international calls, and local ones. Plus free for you when someone in Ireland decides to ring you.

Well I'm having a ball here anyway - the weather has been much better than I expected. Did 2 nights in Bo Phut, 4 on Chaweng. Then moved to Phangnan. One in Haad Yao and now in Haad Rin for 3. Have to say haven't met that many people en route though. Maybe that was just Samui. Haad Yao was too romantic for us. Hopefully we will meet a gang for a chat and a few beers tonight.

Samui, The beaches are fantastic....still has a LITTLE bit of Island Life...but seriously, may as well be Majorca or Benidorm....Tesco, Big C. Makro, MacDonalds, Starbucks,Burger King.....the list is endless....4 years ago OK...now....just aint Thailand....would suggest Krabi, Hua Hin or Cha am which is very Thai....Anyway enjoy your time...be careful, Samui is VERY EXPENSIVE...Taxis, Food, Everything 2-3 times the price.... Have Fun & enjoy....
