Faarang Cops On Samui..

Recommended Posts

For lunch, I went to macdonalds, in chaweng, from bophut where I live... I don't go to chaweng really often so I'm sure this subject has been discussed many times here, but that's the first time I noticed it:

On the way to chaweng road, we passed 5 or 6 tourist police officers... all faraangs !!! some had a black shirt saying "volunteer" in the back, some had a white shirt, and looked more like NSW cops (for those who know what i'm talking about)...

What are they really ? Are they entitled to stop me while I'm speeding - I mean driving - my car ? :o 'cause they don't look like they'd let me get away with a coupla red bills...

Anyway I was just wondering, because I was surprised to see a red haired faraang cop girl here... sorry if this subject has been discussed before.

they are all volunteers, and they do not have the power to stop you on your moped.

There main duties are to assist foreigns who are lost or in distress .....

There is a website about them www.samuitouristpolice.com/

ok, ok, why not...

I checked the web site...

So I get these people aren't getting paid ?

Why on earth would someone want to volunteer ?

Fantasy dress up role playing game ?

yay! let's bash the tourist police volunteers (like was done in a similar thread last year)! Thailand can be a difficult place for a short time tourist with no knowledge of the local language, cultrure, taxi scams, etc. Kudos to the local expats who volunteer their time to help.

I think people who volunteer to help should be congratulated and not just a target for ridicule - which is most likely due to envy by the way.

I'm not trying to mock these people, I'm sure they are really usefull... I'm just trying to understand why one would like to join the force ?

As these people do not have jobs, and are just in thailand to relax!, thus it gives them some excitment in there lives....

I saw 3 of them from my shop tonight going to full moon party. Very hard faces, ugly uniform, escorting some VIP from BKK watching ravers.

Why they don't go back home to enlist in the local police??? At least they can carry a real gun....

Police website is hacked.... good grief if that's not telling.

Anyway, was finally able to make it through to the site without the Russian hacker intrusion... to find:

The equipment should be carried appropriately at a Combat-Belt.

Pepper spray

Electrical Taser

Handcuffs

Telescope Baton

Flashlight

So much for just giving out directions on where the nearest toilet is....

btw, any chance we might hear about the work permits they are required to have to volunteer?

Found on their website:

5. The applicant should have the following documents

5.1 Identity card, legal Passport or any documents which can identify the person.

5.2 Copy of a House Registration where they reside. (yellow/blue Tabien Baan) [if available]

5.3 Copy of Workpermit [if available]

5.4 two (2) colored photos, size 1” x 1”

What... that's it ? No police record from their home country, nothing ? Thank god they aren't given a gun!

And under 5.3 : what does "[if available]" means ? It means that if they have a WP they should provide it, and if not... well doesn't matter. lol

CRITICAL ISSUE

Do NOT visit the tourist police website even if you think you have good antivirus.

I don't know why they don't fix it, the site has been hacked for a long time now.

The stuff on their site is HEAVY stuff.

I know, I am in the network business, what is on that site is EVIL.

I know exactly what is in there and I know exactly how to remove it, but I do not have access to their server (don't want it either)

Don't go there at all.

...bashing volunteer's :o

It's not about bashing volunteerism... it's about setting legal guidelines and awareness of laws...

Borrowed from another Farang Cops thread...

Sheesh, I hardly expected such a firestorm from starting this thread. I was just trying to pass along some potentially useful information.

It's a very interesting discussion, and most of us have been civil. The precedent would be extraordinary, if the [work permit]"exemption" claims were correct.

And calling this thread a "solicition on thaivisa to do illegal work" is a bit much. There have been plenty of prior threads on thaivisa discussing potential volunteer opportunities.

All of which would have been illegal without work permits.

In this case, the volunteers might also have an illusory idea that their status is nonetheless legal.

Any discussion of which always seems to degenerate into a straw man argument, with the rationalizers claiming that those who question these alleged work permit exemptions want to denigrate volunteering, promote crime in the streets, starve the children, etc. Even if nothing ever gets decided definitively on this exemption issue, it's always entertaining.

Nice quote SJ--and so true.

These discussions always go this route and always end up getting closed because people can't seem to help themselves and not start flaming each other.

Thank you.

So, I'll ask the proverbial question yet again in one of these threads.

Do the farang (or foreigner) police volunteers have the legally-required work permits or work permit exemption letters?

We've established they don't in Pattaya and Chiang Mai. What about Samui?

Just give it up, already, SJ. Even if they don't have work permits, I guarantee they're in the clear with requirements being waived by the police for which they work.

And if you counter by saying that the police there don't have that authority as they're not immigration police, remember this is Thailand we're talking about and Koh Samui is an island, so I think they're quite insulated and will be fine no matter what. Do you want to me a volunteer policeman? You certainly seem interested in making sure the laws are kept. Remember this is Thailand we're talking about and laws can be applied differently in different situations. It just really doesn't matter.

Just my opinion. Nothing personal.

As I understand it, these volunteers are generally there to provide help for tourists, something I think we can all agree is necessary.

Whether or not there are bad apples in the bunch hardly justifies tainting every single person who chooses to volunteer as some jackbooted gestapo out to throw their weight around. Some people do actually want to help others.

Just a thought.

Well said JJ.

Seems the moment the word "police" is mentioned we have an outbreak of semi-hysteria on the forum.

Why I wonder? People who have been helped by the "volunteers" are more than likely to be short term holidaymakers who would not be aware of the Forum and therefore not contribute to enable a balanced view.

Personally, I am totally unconcerned as to the validity of their Work permits, it is only their business. However, should their ever be a purge, there are many other groups of Farang worthy of closer inspection. (Perhaps that explains the nervousness generated here and why there are some Farang who would obviously like to see the Volunteers disbanded).
