Worst Ever Cover Song

Celine Dion, AC/DC cover voted worst ever

Dion Utube

Celine Dion and Anastacia's performance of AC/DC's You Shook Me All Night Long has been named the worst cover version ever by Total Guitar magazine. This wretched reworking tops its list of abominations, while Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower has been voted the best cover.

Mercifully, Dion and Anastacia never released their song commercially – it was only performed once – but thanks to YouTube, its place in the musical hall of shame is assured. However, MusicRadar would contend that Dion's soulless version of Stevie Wonder's I Wish is just as bad – not a trace of funk is left by the time she's finished.

All Saints, Westlife, Will Young and The Mike Flowers Pops make up the rest of the 'worst ever' top five, while lower down the list, there are dishonourable mentions for Bruce Willis and – of course - David Hasselhoff.

Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower has long been hailed as a classic, and the same goes for The Beatles' version of Twist And Shout, which makes it to number two on the 'best ever' list. We're not sure that Guns N'Roses clumsy plod through Live And Let Die should be at number three, though – in fact, it's probably on the wrong list entirely.

Here are the top fives in full:

Worst covers

1. Celine Dion and Anastacia, You Shook Me All Night Long (AC/DC)

2. All Saints, Walk This Way (Run DMC ft Aerosmith)

3. Westlife, More Than Words (Extreme)

4. Will Young, Light My Fire (The Doors)

5. The Mike Flowers Pops, Wonderwall (Oasis)

Best covers

1. Jimi Hendrix, All Along The Watchtower (Bob Dylan)

2. The Beatles, Twist And Shout (The Top Notes)

3. Gun N' Roses, Live And Let Die (Wings)

4. Nirvana, The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie)

5. Muse, Feeling Good (Nina Simone)

I'm surprised to see Walk This Way in the "worst covers" list. I thought it was a pretty good cover. Even Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler changed the way the way he sings the chorus in concert to the way he sings it with Run DMC.

I think they are talking about the cover by All Saints.

And I agree about Guns and Roses, they should definitely not be in the best list.

Right you are - I should have taken the time to read it properly. The Run DMC version is technically a cover of Aerosmith's song (Even though it does feature Aerosmith)

Another vote to throw out Guns n Rose of the best cover list. They have some great, strong songs of their own, but their Live and Let Die cover is a very forgettable effort IMO.

As for covers by Nirvana I think their cover of Lake of Fire is far superior to the rendition of The Man Who Sold the World, even though the latter is also very good. It's just that the original is excellent as well.

I think the Mike Flower Pops cover of Wonderwall was quite funny too, certainly not worthy of the worst covers list.

As for Celine Dion, they should have sunk her along with that bloody ship when they had the chance.

Grrrr the All Saints have a lot to answer for. Consider "Under the bridge" originally by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, they not only murdered it, the poor song was hung drawn and quartered.

Thankfully never heard the Celine Dion track. Unfortunately have heard Madonna's cover of Don McLeans "American Pie". It's shit.

As for the G&R cover of Live and Let Die, I thought it was better than the original, but then I thought Wings was a pretty crappy band with pretty crappy songs. I thought Guns and Roses cover of "Knocking On Heavens Door was pretty good too.

Creams cover of "Crossroads" very good, as was Led Zep's "Bring It On Home".

Mike Flowers is very tongue in cheek, shouldn't really be considered as a cover, more 'avin a laff' the same as Rolf with Stairway to heaven.

Total agreement about Celine Dion though.

I thought GN'R's version of Live & Let Die was better than the original. However I do agree with Meadish about Nirvana's version of Lake of Fire being superior to The Man who Sold the World which while good was nothing too special.

As for some of my favourite covers, Rodrigo y Gabriela do a fine version of Stairway to Heaven and an exceptional version of Metallica's Orion.

I'm also quite fond of Seu Jorge's (Sp?) versions of David Bowie songs for the movie the Life Aquatic. I've been trying to track down an affordable copy of "The Life Aquatic Sessions" for a while now with no luck (The last one I came across was $69).

Dolly Parton, while having a beautiful voice and huge jugs, did not better Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven offering. Similarly, Olivia Newton John's "Ring Of Fire", just felt all wrong. The "Man In Black", she ain't.

But the spandex pants in 'Grease' make some amends.

I nominate William Shatner in 1978 who performed Elton John's "Rocket Man".

Then there is

, not sure if it is itself a cover version.

Now that is <deleted>! :o

Then there is this old chestnut, not sure if it is itself a cover version.

Now that is <deleted>!

...It scares me slightly - I expect something else to happen, something bad. Maybe the girls to reveal axes and start hacking away at my legs while still singing the song and smiling.

it is a cover versin indeed, and shows how much music history the originator of the article knows...

I'd like to enter Annie Lennox' Whiter Shade of Pale...While I really like her, this version is utter crap!

.

I think that Peter Sellers, doing "A Hard Days Night" in the style of Laurence Oliviers "Richard III" is worth an honourable mention here in Bedlam.

uhh..how about "Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" by Timmy Mallot:

"Oh YeAH!" :o

Bad cover versions are, to me, like all bad music - instantly forgettable except for those mornings you wake up with some utter cr@p on your mind and it seems nothing can shift it.

But one cover version deserves a mention for being akin to blasphemy...............

Rolf Harris' version of Stairway to Heaven.

All Aussies the world over should hang their heads in shame over this.

Now good cover versions........

Martha and the Vandellas "Dancing in the streets" covered by David Bowie and Mick Jagger 1985.

The Beatles "Dear Prudence" covered by Siouxie and the Banshees 1983 (could also include their version of "Helter Skelter").

Nina Simone's "Don't let me be misunderstood" covered by the Animals 1965.

Barry Ryan's "Eloise" covered by The Dam_ned 1986

and what must be one of the best....

J.J. Cole's "Cocaine" covered by Eric Clapton 1977.

I take umbrage with this for several reasons.

1. Harris has lived in England for approx 50 years. Surely he must now be considered a local there, not Australian.

2. His version of Stairway went to no.7 on the UK charts, not in Australia.

It was only meant as a parody away. I think the Brits should be the ones to hang their heads for making it a monster hit.

:o

I thought Rolf Harris' version was kinda funny. I dont know about other countries, but in the UK it seemed that whenever someone picked up a guitar in a music shop they would attempt to play it..deadly serious..and often badly. It was as though it was the Holy Grail for wannabe guitar players..so, having it turned into a rather funny version complete with wobble board, tickled my funny bone.

And..I love Rolf Harris..as a person (well how he comes across on TV, for ive never met him). Also a kid I grew up watching his Art Show on Tv. Loved his personality. Just seems to be a fun sweet natured guy. He can do no wrong in my eyes! :o

Talking about Stairway to Heaven....does anybody know the Frank Zappa version as performed in 1988? Blows you away! The guitar solo spread over five horns, just monumental!

they did on this tour also I'm the Walrus which was quite impressive and a reggae version of Ravel's Bolero.

@ Phil Harris: absolutely disagree about Cocaine!! JJ Cale was far better then Clapton whom I consider the most overrated gutiar player of all times. Don't get me really going on this one! :o

the worst song ever is called

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life

Agreed, although I don't know if anyone ever did a cover! Thankfully...

OK Croc, you got me on that one. There's no accounting for taste wherever in the the world we are. As for being a local, well he has the beard all he needs now is the dishdash.

And yes, it was meant as a parody but if he'd done the same with the Koran he'd have a fatwah out on him quicker than he could sing "Tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down...."

raro, I'm not going to argue on that one just a matter of personal taste.

Talking Heads cover of Al Green's "Take Me To The River", very good IMO. A good example of cross genre musicianship, delivering a good song to a wider audience.

Assuming you're looking for "The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions" and you don't mind mp3's it's available for download on btjunkie :o

EDIT As is the Frank Zappa "Stairway" :D

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

The Rolf Harris version was just one of 10 or 15 on an album called Stairways to Heaven. An Aussie comedian had bands do covers of Stairway as the closing for his show for a whole season and then released the collection as a CD in time for Christmas. There were some great versions done. The survivors of Led Zep thought is was great as it demystified the song.

Wouldn't lemon juice, vinegar or Mr Sheen been easier.

When I saw the band perform this there was an almost tangible tingle of anticipation as the crowd waited to hear what one of the most inventive guitarists in the world would do with one of the best known guitar solos.

The result was, as you say, amazing! (and very funny) :D

None of the others in my personal top ten made it into the list :o

I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - Elvis Costello

Heartbreak Hotel - John Cale

Doctor My Eyes - Jackson 5

This Wheel's On Fire - Julie Driscoll

Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor

A Heart Needs A Home - Loudon Wainwright/Shawn Colvin

Raspberry Beret - Warren Zevon/REM

Dimming Of The Day - Bonnie Raitt

The Man Who Sold The World - Lulu (Nirvana didn't even come close to the way she just nailed this song)
