Now that we're back on Volvo, I would suggest the 850 is a better choice all round, if you are looking for a solid car, the S40 was as I have mentioned here before a Mitsubishi designed car, not that I have anything against them, but after owning one, I was less than impressed overall. It felt like a Japanese car to drive, light, noisey, poorly appointed. IMO. I like the Volvo for its solid feel, quietness and luxury the S40 missed these I think.

Hello, my name is Patrick. This is my first post, but I often read here.

I'm from Denver, Colorado, USA and have moved to Thailand very recently. In Colorado, I used to have a Volvo XC70 and a SAAB 9-3 Aero.

I am looking for a car here but they are very expensive. The Volvo 850 at 200-300K (trade in value of my XC70! and it's 10 years+ older!!!) is in my price range and somebody also mentioned SAAB 900s (my 9-3 was really good in the mountains and the snow (but none in Thailand :o )

I live in Bangkok, near Don Muang.

I guess I would like to ask teej, rixalex, INTJ, and ignis about finding a SAAB here. I've seen some at local second hand car dealerships but none of them have turbochargers and most of them look terrible I think. But the 900s can be 1/2 the price of the Volvo, from what I have seen. Did SAAB import turbo cars to Thailand? Sorry if I'm off-topic but I didn't want to start a new message board and you guys already were talking about SAABS and Volvos.

So my questions are:

teej: You are a SAAB enthusiast? That's great! I was a member of Denver SAAB club, we had some really nice cars. Do you know more about if I can get a turbo here? Do you have a club here in Bangkok where I could come and join? Do you get group discounts (we used to get them in Denver on group orders). Can you post pictures of your cars? Or you can email me at [email protected]

rixalex: Are you also looking for a SAAB? Have you found any turbos?

ignis: You mentioned parts, does that mean you have a SAAB? Do you know where I could look for more SAAB cars (I went to the dealer at Petburi rd near Asoke and they had nothing for sale).

INTJ: I got confused above, but I take it you also own a SAAB? I'm so happy there are so many SAAB owners. Do you have any info to help me?

I can spend around 150-200K (maybe more, but I hope not with gas prices).

I'm sorry for not talking about the Volvo 850. I can say that I looked for one ( I even called about the one from Expat Motors - I think maybe too expensive for me). But I still will consider a Volvo 850 if I can get one for 150-200k.

You can email me at [email protected]

Thank you for reading.

P.S. How do you guys quote other people in the same message (like 3 posts above rixalex's message has teej, rixalex, teej messages in the lighter colored box? That would save me a lot of typing. Sorry if that's a stupid question.

All the 850 I have looked at @ under 200k are not correct, eg: body repairs/bad resprays. 2 even did not have the wheel airbag [maybe went off in an accident? and was not replaced/cost of replacement] ... under 240k appears to be cars with 250 - 350,000km or bits missing, only the cars over 250k appear to be good all round.. MP tent has about 20 from 189 - 440k... a good manual is about 30k cheaper then the auto

As for Saab Turbo 900 only seen 1, price 339k for a 1995.... Why Turbo? I drove a Turbo auto a few years back the Turbo lag was bad, if I remember correct Saab installed the LPT in the later cars to stop the lag

If you are serious about a Saab 900SE Superdraken (turbo) I'm selling mine (1997). There are only 16 of them left in Bangkok, well that's according to the guy at Saab Petchburi but it tallies with what I see on the road. According to Saab Club of Thailand all 900SE SuperDrakens in Thailand were manual transmissions. Draken is the name of a Saab warplane but was also adopted for a version that came out with the snub nosed body kit.

I'm not sure how much I can talk about it here PM for details

As for servicing, I always got all my parts and service at Autotechnic (the main Saab dealership) on Petchburi Road.

Took delivery of my 850 yesterday, private sale. Apart from small detailing issues, it seems solid, very handsome 17" Lenso deep dish mags on it, so I am happy. As you do with any car there are a few things I will spend my leisure hours tweeking and fixing. So next question to the board I suppose is, has anyone seen a wrecker with 850's, so I can scrounge some odd parts? I'll pop some photo's up when I have some taken. Thanks to you all for the help in finding it. Let the fun & games begin!!

Hi :o

There is an area along Bangna-Trat road on the Bang Plee side (opposite Central Bangna shopping center, but further down that road) there's a ton of wreckers and second-hand parts dealers. I been there before looking for headlights for my Volvo 460 but couldn't find any - yet 850 parts en masse, from bumpers to entire "half cars". The area is HUGE - plan to spend a whole day to see everything :D

Best regards.....

Even this side West there are breakers, and at least 2 of them have 1/2 cars 850........

Makes me a little worried when you see 850 for sale, with no airbags.......... was it a accident repair? 2 halves welded together, and they did not go to the expense of buying/fitting new airbags

Excellent, thanks for that, I will sort out a navigation system first then go hunting around those areas. I don't know about the no airbag thing, mine is fine. I will check it in for a tune soon, when I find a reliable mechanic thats Volvo savvy. Can do it yself but by the time you buy the tools etc...lol

Congratulations on your purchase. It would be interesting to hear some more details on it and see the pics. Anyway, happy motoring!

I've seen some 480's over here, but never in Japan or Oz, so don't know alot about them. Nor the 780...perhaps you could explain about your experience with them, I'd love to hear, as you may tell I am a Volvo nut.. could talk about them all day...

Oz

always liked the 480 which was so not volvo at the time. The 780 is the coupe version of the 7 serie by bertone

Hi :o

I've still got my 460 GLE for sale... if anyone wants it? It's in the classifieds section with a bunch of pictures and good description. It's either YOU or the Isuzu dealer - but it'll be gone by end of this month :D

Best regards....

Volvo's often get jokingly referred to as "Senior citizen's cars" here in Oz. But I have a big heavy right foot and when you want em to they can zoom along! My first was an enthusiasts 244 trade-in and it was for the wife but after I drove it it handled and went so good I claimed it for me! She ended up with a Nissan wagon. A couple of non-Volvo's later I bought an ex-lease 760. I called it the Swedish Cadillac! Nothing like the old 244. But I kept it as it was ideal for work. Then another non-Volvo which made way for the 850 which I enjoyed owning. Kept it till 2004. Nothing in the current line-up gets my heart racing! If only they made a modern day 1800S.

I'm considering getting a 5 year old 2nd hand V70 (2.3T).

Love the shape wagons, and this one I know the full history off since my friend bought it and drives it daily. Never been in another garage then the volvo dealer.

Very low price as well.

Anybody knows how long (in km) the gearbox (auto) on the 2.3 T normally lasts?

I bought a 2005, S60, 2.5T for the wife a couple of months ago it has all the toys black with black leather everything electric and a full Volvo bodykit. I never knew it had 260bhp its bl**dy quick. Basically I've now sold my 4-wheel drive and the missus is without a car as I love the S60.

I also drove an S80 whilst my car was being serviced + the other weekend I was leant a S60R to see if I liked it...... loved it but the missus won't let me buy it, she thinks I will kill myself.

I've been won over by Volvo (must be getting old)

Ps. This is in Qatar not Thailand

Best would be to look or ask on the Boards in the Volvo Club... best would be UK or USA Clubs unless you can read Thai as Volvo club Thailand is mostly all in Thai...

A friend has a 2.3 T 850 with 346,000km and the gearbox is fine, but one hears of failures in the 1st year, there again there are cars driven dally which are 30+ years old with original Engines and auto boxes

I currently have a Volvo 245 auto with 300,000 km on the clock and just had to overhaul the gearbox.

this is however a 25 year old mechanical gearbox, so the full overhaul only cost me 10,000 Baht...

doing the same on a V70 gearbox will set me back close to 100,000 Baht!
