Phuket cleans up the city for the tourist season

PHUKET: -- The administrator of Thailand's famous southern resort island of Phuket has launched a clean-up campaign to show the resort island at its best for the coming tourist season.

Hundreds of Phuket's local leaders, officials, entrepreneurs and students removed litter from the Rawai Beach, one of the province's most popular tourist spots, over the weekend in the ninth Phuket clean-up campaign.

"The campaign aims to make the city clean to impress visitors to Phuket in the coming tourist season," said the province's Deputy Governor, Vinai Buapradith.

"The Rawai Beach and other tourist spots are Phuket's guest rooms; therefore, cleanliness will lead to its good reputation as a world famous tourist city," he said.

Littering problems have accelerated in recent years.

Each district has been ordered to submit a cleaning and litter monitoring plan.

The local authority overseeing the Rawai Beach has signed an agreement with a private company to regularly clean up the area, starting early next year.
