Where Is A Good Electronic Parts Store

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am looking for a shop in bangkok that can make me and my soldering iron happy. I enjoy putting together (and taking apart) circuits boards, and I really need an alternative to ordering stuff from overseas.

Anyone knows a place in Bangkok where I can can this?

I am not looking for a computer or computer parts, so Panthip wont do...

transistors, switches and the like raw materials can be found at BangMorh near The Old Siam shopping center, the other area is at Khlong Thom same same. I would not guarantee computer boards though, but then again I don't actively look for them, so they may be there. Hope that helps

Below is the map to NPE which is in the Ban Moh electronic sales area. From that street back to Old Siam Plaza are many shops selling electronic parts, PA systems and such. Unfortunately it is also the diamond sales area so you may not want to take the wife.

If there are parts you are having difficulty getting (special ICs, microcontrollers, etc.) I order from Futurlec.com (online) very often for parts I need in my design work at the uni (when not available locally). The shipping costs and shipping times are quite reasonable and appears they come out of Bangkok as all the packages show return address from there. I've ordered from them several dozen times or so over a few years with no problems at all, so highly recommend them.

There is a chain of stores called "Amorn", I have visited such stores in CM, Chon Buri, KK and Pattaya's Tukcom Center on South Pattaya Road.

They seem to be found in larger shopping malls - normally in a low rent location, basement or next to the toilets.

I would guess they have a web site, I couldn't find it, try Yellow Pages?

You seem to be a man who know about soldering so can you advise me on how to splice some headphone wires together. These are the very fine wires with many fine strands that seem to be enamel coated (have no plastic insulation). What is the recommended technique for a DIY splice job.

Thanks

Often you will find that such wires are designed to be ultra-flexible, thin and as you say enamel coated, so getting them to allow solder to flow can be difficult. If you tear apart the plastic molding at the plug end of the headphones you will probably find that the electrical connection has been made using what is called an IDC (insulation displacement connection) method. The wire is forced into a tight modified V shape on each 'leg' of the plug, the force cuts through the insulation and there is a slight 'weld' action on a very small scale as the wire and metal of the V are forced together. Similar to wire wrapping if you are familar with that process, the square section of the pin provides points of friction that the wrapping wire welds to. Link: Image on the left shows this type of IDC connection.

If you are replacing the plug - you can (I have) stripped the insulation with a small knife or sand paper, the resultant solder joint was not beautiful but functional. Due to the springy (flexible) nature of these wires, I find getting a good mechanical connection before soldering less easy, so I use the solder as 'glue'. Similar thoughts if you are working on the headphone end.

If you are extending the cable - I would consider using an in-line female connector rather than lopping of the plug to extend the wire.

Hi jbhh

I have an interesting project that requires some electronics work and I so it would be a paid affair. I am a software developer so I do understand quite a lot about PIC code etc. I am in Bangkok at the moment but would like to chill out a bit on the islands so please contact me so we can maybe arrange a meeting to discuss further.

Regards

are you in bkk or hua hin normally?

If you mean me, I am living in Hua Hin. Just go up to Bangkok if I really have to :D

BIG Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. It took me quite a while to find my way around in the different sites, but in the end I managed to successfully order something from es.co.th :D Now, let's see if/when it get's here :o

i think they have a shop in old siam at the top floor. the shop is okay, but nothing special. it's okay to have a look if you are on the way to ban moh. but i guess nothing really here that you would not find in ban moh, maybe some very specializes things. small collection compared to NEP.

On a recent trip to Bangkok paid a visit to this store to get a replacement relay for my UPS. Not difficult to find with the help of the map and the wife was too busy instructing the taxi drver to notice the diamond stores :o

I got an exact replacement relay same make and everything. Great shop Thanks "lopburi3"[/coldriveror] for the info. Unfortunately replacing the relay did not fix the UPS, something else must be broken to make the relay burn out. :D

Still know where to go for any future electronic bits.

Can anyone tell me where I can replace my Weller 8250D soldering gun which has been stolen?

I can't tell you if you find the exact gun that has been stolen, but Baan Moh will be your best bet to find something of high quality. NPE would be my first place to visit to find soldering equipment along with some places next to the klong in Baan Moh.

I know this thread is old, but just for archival purposes, NPE as mentioned, is a wonderful store. One shop in Ban Moh, and another at Zeer Rangsit. I personally like the Zeer store better as you can actually drive and park there. For Ban Moh, you either have to take a taxi, or else or try and park at Old Siam and walk.

However, for most things, just ordering online from Electronics Source is easier and cheaper. http://www.es.co.th. Select what you want, deposit the money into their Bank account at SCB (or use your credit card online) and they EMS you the parts. You'll have it within 48 hours of payment.

If you really need it right now, then NPE is great, but their prices aren't that good for components. Electronics Source is much better, especially when you're buying more than 1 or 2 of something, and they have a better selection (their website is certainly an order of magnitude better. Even includes accurate datasheets if you can believe that.). Only complaint is ES doesn't carry resistors. If you want those, you'll have to make the trip to NPE.

Thank you for your help.

I knew I would't get my solder gun back. It was a beauty.

Here is a picture of the 550D.

They are about $50 in the states.

My 8250D however was a factory 220 volt model.

Come on Crossy help me out.

I see these on line at ACE hardware but they won't ship overseas.

Most hardware stores sell local/chinese copies of these guns that work just fine for a few hundred baht.

Two things - test instore to make sure the gun has sufficient heat and buy quite a few heads as they burn out after about fifty hours of use.
