Hotel Recommendations In Ranong During Visa Run

Hi,

I need to make a visa run to Ranong in a month and I want to take my family (wife and young son) with me so we can spend the night in Ranong. I am thinking about driving up from Phuket, spending the night in Ranong, getting up the next morning & doing the exit/re-entry procedure and then driving back to Phuket.

I am kindly soliciting advice/recommendations on reasonably priced hotels in Ranong. Any advice/recommendations is greatly appreciated.

I've tried a few of the more upmarket hotels in Ranong and I find the Garden Hotel (on the bypass Road, near junction to immigration/ferry port) the most fun and value for money. Rooms about 600 baht, the resturant is a hoot with in-house local singers. But bring your own wine and you just have to try the 80 baht steak dinners.

Consider spending the night at Club Andaman, the casino hotel just inside Burma on a small island opposite Ranong. You don't need a visa to go there. You are stamped out of Thailand at the immigration office at the pier ,and taking the boat back to Ranong the next morning you get your Thai entry stamp at the same office. Club Andaman has its own pier, and at the hotel you simply pay with Thai currency.

It costs roughly 2000-2500 baht to spend the night there (!5 star facilities, breakfast included), their number is 077830461, or for reservations 0818942583. They have a great swimming pool, a nice restaurant which isn't too expensive, you can buy taxfree booze and maybe you'll strike it rich at the slot machines.

I've stayed at one of the small hotels in the downtown area on the main street.

I don't remember the name but there are a few of them.

I believe it was around 400 baht.

Very clean and fine with us as we don't like air-con and all those bigger expensive places seem to have it.

Not a lot happening in this town but we like to stay as we can really take our time getting there and back and stop at some of the waterfalls and parks on our way. Thailand is a beautiful country and we always like to take advantage to see as much of it as we can when we travel.

Another lovely place on the way is at the beach near the town of Muang Thai. There are only 2 places to stay there and this area is REAL Thailand with happy people, leaving their keys in their motorbikes, and helping us out however they can.

Reckon you mean Thai Meuang, 30 KM south of Khao Lak and 22 KM north of the bridge to Phuket. No real swimming beach there, but there are a few nice untouristy beach restaurants. As you say, there are also a few places to stay near the beach.

If you want to make a contribution to the coffers of one of the worlds most evil and abhorrent regimes then go ahead. That same Govt. oppresses it's own people so much that they risk their lives to flee the country and work for less than 100Bht a day in Phuket's insane construction industry. If you can justify paying 2500 Bht to for a room in such a place then do so.

After all it's only your conscience at stake.

Club Andaman used to be owned by a Thai businessman. If it is correct what you say, at what point did the Burmese state become the owner?

I thought it was owned by a Thai Senator. The same guy who owns Air Asia or one of those airlines?

Regarding the worlds most evil countries, I agree Myanmar is on the list, I just think another western country would win hands down as they do it smiling and saying its for Freedom.. Also Myanmar does not have a government, they have a military dictatorship run by the generals and family.

Also the rooms at The Andaman Club are about 1500 baht if i remember, so your prices are also wrong..

Was just there. Baan Chuengkao 'Resort' was nice for those driving, especially with spouse or family. 850bt for a nice room, good bathroom, cable, fairly good and certainly friendly service. They had off street parking and excellent Thai food in the restaurant. Right on the main road so noisy in the front units (accommodation is in one story duplexes), ok in the back. If heading into Ranong from the South take the first u turn past the Tesco Lotus (this is before the town proper) and it will be on your left before you pass the Lotus again. Smallish white sign with red letters.

I also thought that Club Andaman was Thai owned? We have stayed their a couple of times and have enjoyed it. Otherwise the Tinidee Hotel in Ranong which is the ex Royal Princess Hotel is well worth it.

The Royal Princess is now called the Tindee Hotel. The cost was about 1500 baht per night.

The Suta Bungalows are also a good choice, if a little small, but the price of 350 baht is very attractive. They have a TV with some English channels, hot water shower and towels/soap provided.

I would not advise the Kiwi Orchid GH as since the change of ownership, the standards have slipped a lot.
