John McCain just very graciously conceded defeat in the 2008 US Presidential election.

He never had a chance. And now we'll see what Obama does with his. Shouldn't take long to find out.

As always, the true mark of whether or not the new president can be effective, is will he be able to tell the people who helped him get elected to go to hel_l.

Didn't take long for McCain to concede defeat. Is that a normal period of time or was this truly a landslide to be remembered?

What might be more interesting is how many of the incumbents will be booted. The majority of Congress should rightly be purged.

Tuky, Obama had already gotten more than the electoral college votes required to win the election. There were not enough remaining electoral college votes for McCain to even have a chance. Its not based on total popular votes but electoral college votes won on a state by state level.

As for the idea that we won't have to wait long to see how he does, well, at least until January when he takes office :o

"That" struggle is largely over. Get on the bus. Plenty of other struggles ahead though.

Looks like there's been a misunderstanding here. Tutsi, was, I believe, merely pointing out that there are some who will say that. I don't think he is necessarily saying he believes that himself

There will always be a small minority of racist cretins. Their numbers shrink each year so their rhetoric gets sharper and more divisive. That's never going away. The real racism was when the majority, and its proxies in government, with a nod and a wink, kept whole segments of the poulation down. That's history.

pretty much, the RULES were made by racist white men. It's up to the new president to demonstrate that they can be defeated.

sbk and lanna...we got the same thing in our hearts. The history of America is litany of white racist status quo that we don't want to see continued.

one of the first things outta Obama's mouth was 'democracy'...that don't mean nothin' to an afghani tribesman...

I wonder what the Democratic landslide would have been like if Obama had been a W/A/S/P.

The whole world was racist then, including the black men who capured the slaves in the first place.

To be honest I don't know the first thing about this guy. I saw a speech he made on TV when I made a visit to America some months back and I saw his acceptance speech just now. He seems like a very bright guy. I especially like his acceptance speech becasuse it rang true for me. democracy , as practiced in America is a divisive ideology. Pit white aginst black, rich against poor, old against young, gay aginst straight, etc. All in an effort to get that magical majority vote. I like that he seemed to want to bring people together to get his majority. Nothing gets a helluva lot better till the rules are the same for everyone. I think alot of his supporters don't realize that however, and I hope he has the guts to tell them so.

as far as I'm concerned democracy is an ideology that has a "use by" date on it. That day is fast approaching. If you can't use it to bring people together you have to shitcan it.

that fckin' Bush is a WASP...ruling on fear of raghead terrorists. The big question in WHY??? Why the <deleted> do they hate us? Do the necesary analysis an' check it out for yerself... :o

I hate to rain on the parade...Obama is a good first step. But...we got a long way to go to make the vision of a better world a reality.

Bright is one way to put it :o

President-elect Obama graduated from Harvard Law School where he was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. He was a Constitutional Law professor at the University of Chicago Law School

Doesn't surprise me a bit, Clinton was a very bright guy too. In fact I'd say he had the greatest political skill of any politician I'd seen in my lifetime, and a good deal of intelligence as well. Unfortunately, IMO, he squandered all that, at a time of historic peace and prosperity, and failed to move the country forward. His personal need to feel love kept him from making any hard (read meaningful) decisions. I hope this guy can rise above himself, unlike Clinton.

Dismantling the corporate war machine is a no brainer, though the stock market (and the population who own it) won't like it. It's the right thing to do anyway. Don't prop up failures. Let then fail, then help them up. That''s how you learn.

intelligence does not indicate ability....presidents have to worry about things like nuclear war...I am a commissioning engineer and I have to make decisions that cost people money. I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed but when the swords are drawn Yojimbo best look out...

I also write very compelling correspondence.

but...there is a way to limit the damage. There ain't no revolutions anymore...Fidel an' HoChiMinh were the last revolutionaries. The democratic process by definition excludes armed combat. We have to manoeuvre within the constraints. Some of us struggle and fight...others, like meself, drink vodka on our back terrace and complain. But, I always say...'I believe in the reality of a better world...'

One hel_l of an acceptance speech by Obama

check the buzz word 'democracy'...it ain't for America to shove down people's throats...and America cannot expect to have a successful foreign policy that does...

(ol' abdulmedullah sitting on his mud hut patio in Hemat wouldn't want the responsibility...)

what??? OK, given the opportunity, tutsi shall talk about his nieces....

(tutsi wants to set up a shot where his nieces are disapprovinmg...to the most beautiful, tutsi sez 'stand over here and cross your arms across yer chest and look at me like I'm a turd...' she sez 'why would I want to do that??? you are not a turd and I love you...' tutsi attempts to explain poetic license...and is unsuccessful...

and I wanted to buy a video camera... :o

Obama got 2/3rds of the Electoral College votes (everyone will say landslide) and less than 55% of the actual votes cast. Only in America .....

I have just seen on the news that the actual split was 52% Obama and 46% McCain. And yet 341 college votes to Obama (he only needed 270!). Maybe they need to re-think their electoral system...

The electoral college is one of the best things about the American political system. Can't imagine why anyone would want to change it.

You may think that, however, how come with 52% he gets 341 which looks like a land-slide? (these figures may change ever so slightly)
